I have a 1968 Vette with a 1969 350/350hp , I want to change the stock distributor out but it won't come out more than 3/4 to 1 in. and stops. It rotates about 1/3 of a turn as it comes up and stops and goes back down with a smooth motion. I've pulled other dist. with no problem, any help ??? thanks......... , I want to change the stock distributor out but it won't come out more than 3/4 to 1 in. and stops. Yes I did unhook the wire, it feels like it hits something on the way out, should the engine be TDC ?

It doesn't matter where the engine is at rotationally. You have to have the distributor centered quite exactly in the bore to lift it out.If there is any interferance between the firewall and the distributor cap, which is making you lean the distributor foreward as you lift up, take the cap off. That sucker has to pull straight up out of the engine.Old guy hot rodder

Has anyone have the pin that holds the gear in-place come out and keep the dist. from being pulled out ? I might drop the oil pan to see ????
