Not sure about your area, but around here the local 4x4 shops are the place to go for rear gear work. They're into them all the time, know the ropes with the different units and often are cheaper...

I'd listen to Jerry and drop the pan, or try his proof tests first close to home. If he's right, you are on borrowed time for a flatbed ride home....

How's the transmission mount? The 1-2/2-1 shift is the harshest - could it be bouncing a bit on the mount? Just a thought.
