    Question How much Pearl

What ratio is PEARL mixed with clear? I'll be using Ppg Pearl and Ppg clear 2021. Is it a matter of taste or is there a general ratio ?

    Toolow,
Actually there isnt a true mix ratio .
I recomend mixing small amounts and shooting test panels, as to much will go muddy, can change the base you are shooting it over.
3-4 coats of pearl should be plenty!

    What is your main color?
And what color pearl are you using ?

The Pearl is PRL 92 Frost Blue Pearl and the basecoat is dbu 5214 SC Dahila Blue Met. Can you spray PRL over met. and does it look right ?

Yes you can shoot pearl over metalics, but may I ask why you want blue pearl over a blue metalic?
I highly suggest you spray a test panel to see the effect it will make.

Are you trying for a certain look? like changing colors at different angles ?
    Like a floping paint job?

If you can try and clue me in on the look you want I will try and help you on it .

As I use the PPG powdered pearls everyday when I mix color.
I just spot painted 2 tri stage pearl front ends today , but they were the pearl coat first and tinted clear second, like a candy. Is this the look you are wanting like the bright reds on the new cadillacs?

I've got a tailgate skin with the big embossed bowtie. I want it to look different from the rest of the truck. I thought if i just sprayed the whole truck the basecoat , then clearcoat. Tape off the bowtie and lay the pearl on thick in more clear. Then reclear the whole truck It would make the bowtie flop from different angles.

I would choose the gold, or violet pearl with 3 light coats. it would kick better.
I see you are using DBU, I would buy a quart of DBU 500 base clear( it designed just for this type stuff), its a clear that is in DBU base formula and is reduced with the DRR reactive reducer. add your pearl to this and spray over your bowtie when your main base is dry and can mask it off and not tape track.
Then clear the whole thing with your 2021 clear, the tape edge will be a whole lot finer done this way , and will elininate the expence of using the catalyzed clear.

Putting pearl in the clear wasn't the intended way of using it. Dupont or PPG have never said to put pearl in its clear. How ever it gets done quite often. There is no ratio for this reason alone. It takes very little pearl to make a big affect. A half teaspoon is all needed for a qt of clear. If this was mixed with the paint it would be over shadow and the pearl wouldn't bee seen. Being it's is in the clear there is nothing to keep it from shinning through. What your are creating ia a tri coat paint. This is already there to be purchased but it will cost you a lot more their way. This is the poor mans way to to get a tri coat. Two coates is all that is needed with the pearl in the clear, then another coat to finish off. The pearl is grainy and need a coat of clear to seal it off. If you need or want to sand and buff you will need two coats to seal off. Sanding through the clear in to the pearl can lead to blotchy spots. Two coats will help solve this. To much pearl can change the color all to gether. Happy painting.

Unhappy Paint over crome, locals say it won't hold

I have a crome front grill painted that is flaking because of bugs and some local shops say paint won't hold over crome. I have seen manufactures do this on crome on new cars, how do you make it stick???

Hey I want to know what is involved to get the white pearl paint that is on the new Lexus sport 2 seater? What color primer, base and whatever else they use. Do I buy Lexus paint from the dealer??? Any help out there? What do you say "SprayTech"?
    Thanks

You need to find an Automotive Paint Jobber as they sell the TRI-Stage Paint for any car made! Its all Base Coat /Clear Coat and can get quite expensive .

You can use any color sealer , but a tintable sealer tinted white will help in faster coverage on the first White Base coat, then you will have a MID-Coat ( which is your pearl coat) spray between 3-4 coats , then clear it , that is how its done.

I spot Tri-Stage Cadillacs all day long , its not tough when you know what your doing.
Just be carefull as to many coats of pearl ( as I have mentioned many times before ), will go muddy ( white base will get yellow or go real grey looking) with to many coats of pearl !!! So be careful of loading up on the pearl, as less is usually better in the pearl application !
