    Paint question?

My tailgate is home made with chevrolet punches out in the metal. It's painted Dark Rosewood Pearl base coat/clear coat using PPG paint and I want to highlight the word chevrolet. Since I'm not a car painter can I paint over the letters without sanding or anything. If not what do I need to do?

Here is what i would do if it came into my paint shop.
water sand the whole outside of N-gate with 800#
then mask off the area you dont want painted, spray your Highlite base color , peal off masking and clear the whole outside of N-gate, this way you dont have harsh tape lines and can be lightly sanded and buffed .

Hope this helps you. and I would use PPG's base and clear that used the first time.

Spray Tech Thanks for the info. I was wondering if I could just take a paint brush and paint over the letters with a clear coat. I have a steady hand. Just a thought.

Streets Since I haven't done any crusing since the car show last week, be my guess, but if it rains don't blame JOE!!!!!.HaHaHa. My truck made the 50 best of the year in last month classic cruiser magazine. Picked up a trophy for best chevy truck last week.

You could brush paint it with signpainters paint (Like One Shot Enamel). But, that wouldn't be as smooth a finish as Spray Tech's mehtod. You could also tape and spray the One Shot but you would have a tape edge.

Using 1 shot lettering/stripeing paint will work just as well.
It should last a fairly long time if you like hand rub the area with rubbing compound before applying the 1 shot paint. This will help clean any polish , or road grime , and such.
Then after a week of dry time you can go back over it with a good polish to help seal it off.

I usually forget about hand stripeing as I always use an air brush or paint gun, my hands areant as steady anymore ,a straight line would end up like a
    EKG line ...LOL

I found out the best paint brush you can use is a pussy tail. Its smooth and very soft to the touch and leave practically no ridges on the enclosed work that your doing it on.
