NO. i am sorry. i have done body work for over 30 years i have work on them roof s. i would not use any blaster .if by a roof rack or a small spots by the ribs yes but not out in the flat spot of the roof it going to warp . i said how i would do it that is best way for me to do it. but do it any way you want

Owned a body shop for over 40 years and I would never blast a big flat roof like on that Burb. Warp city!!!!!!!!!
DA with 80 the up to 180 Epoxy 2 heavy coats and yer good to go.
DON'T BLAST IT>

You guys need to deal with smarter blast shops!!!!!

I did not think the small blaster would do a lot of damage

I would try to wire brush it or sand it with 36 grid. Get rid of the rust and then paint it with Rust-Not or any other product like it that will stop the rusting. Rust is like cancer, if any is left you are in trouble. This Rust-Not will kill the rust and you can paint over it.

its dead flat and this has heavy pits by the time its clean it will be warp its going to move .if you grind it and get it hot. it will warp .if you never ever used a blaster on a panle like this you will warp it .now if you think you can do it with out warping it go ahead .then when all that steel is loose like a big oil can post back up on here .rust stops with out air and water. i have seen hole car with rust get primed over and not rust for many years .now if you know some pro thats basted hole roofs like this then take it to him maybe they can do it? but if it gets over work it going to get loose when the steel get thin as the rust is removed then your going to make more work then you have ever seen. but hey i know nothing now that i started thinking about this go ahead blast it this is what your going to do so go on i have told you the fool proof way to fix it

The guys that does my blasting has never warped a panel on any of my stuff...... I guess he must just be dang good at his job, has the right equipment, and uses the right product..l...... Never said I could do or everyone and anyone could do it....but there are people who can clean up a panel like that with a blaster and not cause damage or warpage......

well yes and if a pro did it i am sure they would do alot or all of the roof way back with the blaster head low on psi and hi on sand or with ever they hit it with.but he said he was going to fix it ? he not a pro ?so wasting my time posting on this trying to keep him out of a bigger messthere some spots were when clean there very well could be holes them roofs are not that thick

It does have 4 ridges that run the length of it. Its not truly flat. Dont mean to be beaten a dead horse . Just want it done right. I never was planning on blasting the entire roof , just the 80% of where the rust is.lol I just was going to hit the rust spots. I really think I am going the naval jelly route that some one posted a link to above.

yep and thats flat steel between them . if a hi crown it would take much more . i know what the roof looks like i wish i could say i do not... i painted more then one and strip more then one .i did this for a liven for many years at real shops .i was not a back yard yahoo that was done after work

You guys think naval jelly left over night will ruin something. I dont think i will have enough time to seal it up tonight and yes Pat it is in my back yard,lol. Dont want to leave to exposed metal in the open air. In the morning i can wet with a spray bottle and give it a quick DA sanding before painting. Thanks
How can I protect the areas overnight so they dont start to rust again?

Use Phosphoric acid on the rusted areas & it'll clean it right up. You may have to treat it a couple of times but it will eat the rust up...joe

I have sanded the entire roof but only taking the rust spots down to bare metal. The naval jelly is working beautifully! Its pulling all the rust up off the metal. I have some pits thought where its just black not rust color. Can I paint over the pits? I see now what you mean Pat. I can not get the pits out with out warping the panel. Well , back to it it will be another 4-6 hours of elbow grease and sweat but its looking like its going to work. Just worried about the pits.... Thanks for the help and excuse my ignorance.

take the pits and scrach them out with a nail or awl what will not come out do not worry about it just make sure the naval jelly is not still live wash good dry it and i would push some mar glass or some fiber glass filler in them big pits
