How to fix this problem, rusted panel?

I have a suburban that has had a bad paint job in the past and I need to fix and stop the rust from spreading and prep for paint in the future. So I will have to finish with some type of epoxy primer. Should I sand or try to sand blast. I dont know what type of chemicals to prep to stop the rust from coming back. Thanks for any help.

Well, it's pretty far gone....For sure it's going to need some sandblasting, then the POR 15 treatment process---their website details the products you need and the method of application.... It works good as long as you follow the instructions and don't try to take any shortcuts to save a couple bucks.....

you could used pool acid with a 3m red scuff pad use all things needed to work safe with acid rubber gloves face and lungs. wash spot down with alot of water and baking soda wash then with metal prep wipe dp epoxy it on it i do one spot at a time seal it up with a epoxy so it will not rust up or use a clean n strip wheel on a roof you do not want to sand blast it you will warp it all to hell

Aircraft quality (and safe) paint stripper is required, followed up with 180 grit, then 200 grit, and finished off with 320 grit automotive grade sandpaper. After all that is done you need a DTM (direct to metal) epoxy primer followed up with a good topcoat of paint (enamel is fine for it). Do not leave it just primer/sealer as primer/sealer is not meant to be exposed to the elements and will actually attract and wick moisture causing the panels to rust even faster than before.

Oh yeah, make sure the guy doing the sandblasting knows what he's doing, or you'll wish you still had the rust!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Guess I'm spoiled, been using the same guy for 20 years, he's really got the touch.....and some hi dollar equipment... Don't think they even use sand anymore?????

I'm using a Sherwin Williams automotive product, part #E2B931 (black) and E2B932 (white).

I use it day in and day out when dealing with surface rust like that. never had a problem as long as I finish the surface prep to 320-400 grit. Gives the material enough bite while allowing the sanding scratches to self level and disappear.

Talked to the guys at the local paint shop and they said that if I sand blast it just blow it off and cover with Dupont 2505s DTM epoxy primer/sealer and it should be fine. Does this sound right or am I missing some thing? I will do the sand blasting with this http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=34202

Thanks for the advice guys. I am going to take care of it this weekend so I should get some pics back up.
I will get it painted some time in the future when the budget allows. For now I want to stop the rust and know that I did it correctly. I dont want to pay for a 3000 dollar paint job and the rust pop back up. I feel better taken care of the rust my self instead of taken some ones word for it being taken care of.

I realize this is from a competing site, but I thought I would share another way to get rid of the Rust-

i would use that or vap a rust or jelly or pool acid long with a 3m clean strip wheels long before blasting with sand just a big mess with sand .i like to say i never fixed stuff like this but in mich thats just old hat. i have work on old steel if you metal prep it and seal it with DP or a epoxy it will seal the rust whats left if any in the pits and will slow it down and will last a long time

I guess I will hit it with a DA and lightly with the media blaster. That might be best?
