I stopped at a yard sale this morning and managed to end up buying a 1950 Pontiac. Its a nice rust free texas body but the previous owner sprayed it with primer and didn't take the tape off the stainless or the glass. This stuff has been on there for years. I know it's a major pain to deal with but I was wondering if anyone knew any tricks for dealing with this situation..
paint striper or goop i have used paint striper
if it's lacquer primer, it may rub off with lacquer thinner
Try WD-40.
Might check to see if it contians silicon . . . I don't think it does.
Haven't tried WD-40 on old masking tape, but it works great on old price tags on hard surfaces.
Use a small brush to paint it onto the masking tape so you don't get it all over your primer.
Masking the primer before using WD-40 may be a good idea.
WD40 is the worst silicone contaminant I've found. I won't even allow it in the shop.

i use acetone. wipes the paint right off. please do not use wd-40.
The paint is not the issue ....It's the old masking tape and there is a lot of it. I have seen this before but this is really bad. I almost wonder if there's a way to keep it wet enough to make it soften up so I could use something besides a razor blade on it.Quote:

I think I would try some Easy Off Oven Cleaner. The old sign painters would use it to remove lettering on truck doors. Another option might be to find a vinyl sign supply house and purchase some vinyl lettering remover.

well been here done this air craft stripper works it wets outs the tape and will take it off .you use a plastic filler spreader to work the tape off the trim.and then when you get the tape off you find it is sanded with a da :eek:
If acetone or lacquer thinner and some rubbing won't get it off, I've also used the decal removers that go in the chuck of a drill. If you watch the speed and keep it moving you won't damage the chrome or stainless...
You can try M1 adhesive remover. www.goodbuyguys.com under adhesive removers. Masking tape is more or less a wax type paper with glue adhesive. Good chance that adhesive is pretty dried out by now. You can first try laying rags soaked in HOT water to soften and saturate the tape and loosen the adhesive. This may or may not work depending on the type of masking tape it is. Even if this saturates the paper part of the tape and exposes the adhesive your ahead of the game. It will allow the adhesive to become somewhat gummy again possibly but then use your adhesive remover to remove the glue and residue. You can try it on a small area and see how it works.

it will remove anything and it sprays on.
I own a digital Vinyl Graphics shop and did custom paint for about 9 years on HD's. My suggestion, since you're mostly trying to save the chrome, is use enamel reducer because it will soak into the old tape good before it evaporates. Lacquer and MEK and stuff like that evaporate really quickly. Use a plastic squeegee or bondo spreader and everything should come right off.
I ended up using a plastic ice scraper(found under the seat of an old car)after keeping it wet for a while. then I finished it off with some thinner and steel wool..came out good... I have used 3M weatherstrip remover. Its actually Naptha. Leave it on awhile. Then its blade city.
i hate wd40 as much as anyone but i was informed it has no silicone in it . good thing i didn't bet :D but i still watch where i use it.

i think it just hangs in the air for a long time. i work at a body shop and next to it was a mag and alum casting foundry they had something over there oil fired? and if the wind was blowing just right you could smell it like hot sand and oil smell . i would get very small pin fish eyes in the finsh the only time i would get any was when they fired them up and the wind was blowing just rightQuote:
