I am going to paint my car. I everything but the paint. I am working on a tight budget. I was wondering is this paint is any good.

The last time I painted a car was 1990, 1979 Corvette, it was either torch red, or flame red, memory has long gone. $100 a gallon I’m not sure what the clear cost, hardener, fish eye remover, reducer???

Barb, I'm not sure about that brand of paint. Most of the Guys around here use Sem and Dupont. When it comes to paint I'm sure alot of guys on here will tell you, buy the best you can afford. By the time you factor in all the labor and prep work, the amount you save on paint won't matter too much, and good paint will spray better and last longer! You must be excited if your getting close to painting it! Are you thinking Candy apple red?
Hotrodpaint might be able to give you some good input on this thread.

First I have to ask who is painting it? Candies are the most difficult for a painter to shoot on large areas. It is very hard to keep it from being "splotchy".

If you want that kind of look, but easier to do successfully, try to find a two stage pearl, with a candy "look" to it.

If you insist on a candy, and the painter has not done it before, use a metallic red base coat. That way, if it isn't the same thickness everywhere, it will be hidden much better.

Cost of paint:

First of all...yer gonna need a lot more than what's in that picture!!!

Reds are some of the most expensive paint. Good paint can cost $400 a gallon. If you use cheap paint, expect it to lose it's gloss, and turn pink or orange on the top surfaces, in a very short time.

For good paint, plan on spending $1,000 minimum for primer, sand paper, masking materials, sealer, basecoat, clear, hardeners, all of your reducers, wiper, and final sanding & buffing materials.....if you want paint that will last. Cheaper paint will not fall off, but it will fade, and "chalk out".

If you want to save some money, use light colors like yellow, white, light blue, etc. Use a single stage with hardener. These are not so prone to fading if you use cheap paint, and cost less, if it's quality paint.

If you paint it yourself, be warned that the hardener is bad for your health, and a cartridge type mask is not good protection!

....or there is always Early Schieb.... or tractor paint. :-)

thanks guys. I am going to do what you have said. I do not want a cheap paint but it is all that i can afford. I had no idea that the paint color sets the price. I will look into the tractor paint.

Barb, I went to look at a 55 Chevy for sale about 10 years ago, and it was painted John, Deer Yellow. I don't know what the cost would be but I hear others talking about their Blitz satin, and it’s cheaper but good paint. The car didn't look bad plus it must hold up pretty well to be outside most of the time in the sun. Whatever you decide too use get a good respirator like hotrodpaint said.

The hardener is like a liquid plastic.

The hardener contains "isocyanates", which are very nasty, and will generally go right through a charcoal filter mask.

When you do buy paint, remember the old saying "you get what you pay for". If you don't pay much, then don't complain when it does not last as long as good paint.

I just saw a Corvette I did in '86, and it still looked fresh. I used a well known, but cheaper brand of paint on a Nova a few years ago, and it was failing in two years.

Do you have to go with the air pack or is there a filter reasonable that would work on base coat clear coat? Years ago when I painted the Vette I had what looked like plastic strands coming out of my nose when I would try to clear it to breath. I used a 3M charcoal filter mask, which was supposed to be a good one.

The charcoal filter masks work for most things, other than hardeners. I don't know if there is currently anything on the market that is effective. I use a remote air mask, getting my air from another room.

That's what I was thinking since today when a guy is painting and a car magazine is covering the process they all use outside air. I've used the hardener but can you get by without it in some paints, like single stage? I had a 55 Chevy that had a single stage red and it really had a gloss.

The catalyst / Hardner is what gives a Single Stage & clear coats its durability , it can be sprayed with out it , but the longevity is greatly reduced !

Plus repairability is often compromised too .

I would bet that Candy Apple Red is the 1970's - 1980's Ford solid red , like what was used on Old Fire Trucks also

Who is painting this jyardgirl ? You or some one that know's how to spray color ? If your going to try to do it and its your first try , go with some thing thats not expensive , as if you mess it up you didnt waste several hundreds of dollars to give it whirl .

If you have some one thats qualified and can give you a quality job , I would save your money and get the best you can afford !

I use to like the lacquer but it was a lot of work and it would crack over time but the shine was deep. Then you could no longer buy it 10 years or so ago.

jyardgirl, I have just started, I painted my trailer that I just finish building. Turn out ok, and I paint small car parts, I just want to say pay attention to the pros, you can rent a fresh air mask out from your local tool rental its very important. I don't no much about painting but plan on buying me a fresh air mask set, Hobby Air has one for around $500. Check this out hope link works.

As much as I have heard the stuff get flac.. get Dupli Color paint shop paint, you can get it in red, black, blue or silver. it's laquer so if you mess up, it will be easy to fix it, but it is pre thinned so it will take the guessing out of the paint mixing.

i am going to do that matt. can i apply it over a enamel based primer?
