MG-Badass! I love that thing! Congrats, pel. What's next?
Awesome mate and now you have a problem...... you folk are heading into your winter so what are you going to do for your fix of drag racing...... You may have to start another project as a man can't have too many on the go at once aye......
Congrat's Pel! That is just so badass lookin'! Love the wheels up launch! What's next??? 9's FLAT!
Thanks for the support Guys!!
It would ne nice to see the season out with a 9.59 timing ticket. But as long as she stays firmly in the 9's for the rest of this year I'll be very happy.
In fact I'm sort of looking forward to the end iof the season so we can start all those little jobs for next year :)
Make up some zoomies to see if they help on the dyno. I've always wanted 8 pipes rising from the hood !
Fit my transbrake gearbox is next on the list if I have time. I would rather break something testing transbrake launches this year so I have the winter to fix it ;)
I'm re desinging all that gubbins on top of the blower to get rid of those awful adaptor plates. I've found a big chunk of ally that I will get milled into one neat plate that bolts to the blower but then has about 2" of rise under the carb so i can fit my direct port injectors undwer the dominator instead of the nos spray bar plate. This means I can save money as I wuill fit 4 fogger nozzles. Two for the first nitrous stage which is via the 20 year old progressive controller. And the other two for a fixed hit 2nd stage, or maybe progressive if I can find my spare controller. The list of little things to do is quite long.
But I'm thinking that if I fit the box with the transbrake I can launch with boost and leave the nitrous on delay for a couple of seconds off the line. I cant hold much rpm on the foot brake as the brakes dont hold over 2000rpm and I go through the lights early and pull a red when I try it. With the engine loaded on the footbrake at 1800rpm its only making 4psi of boost.
If the rear end is taking a small amount of boost with 50hp of nitrous off the line, and then another 100 shot of nitrous coming in over 0.9 of a second, by which time the boost has ramped up to 10psi, I reckon it should be able to cope with 10psi of boost right off the line and then bring in the nitrous 2 seconds after launch. Thats the theroy anyway.
I'm also thinking about a cam change. But I wont know what cam to even think about until I actually get this setup on the dyno hopefully next month. Cam are sort of black magic to me? But I have two friends who are well versed in cams and how to choose them for specific tasks :)
In the meantime I will sit back and wallow in my 9.69 seconds of fame until the next time out.
Regards to all you folks over the water.
Pel
Wow great runs, your really dialing it in! Must feel like being strapped to a rocket at take off! Nicely done, Pel.
P.S. Like the ice racing Nick!
Now THAT is a winter sport right there
Wonder if they have to plug in their oil pans to keep the blocks warm?
Another slight improvement today at the track :)
I run a 175 shot of gas at this time.
I dropped my nitrous start power from 105 hp with the other 70hp coming in over 0.9 seconds to 95hp with the other 80hp coming in over 0.7 seconds.
The result was a 9.62 second pass. 60 foot time down from 1.48 to 1.39 seconds.
I could not do any more runs due to a fuel leak that I could not fix. But I'm happy with a new PB straight off the trailer !
Slo Mo vid here with real time vid to follow on Monday when my friend gets home to upload it.
So so close to the 9.5 I'm looking for by the end of this year.
regards
Perry

way to boogie, man!
I thought the 9.62 PB on Saturday was the highlight of the weekend??
But on Sunday I was presented with something that beats the new PB?
My first Grand Child :)
My Daughter came to the track on Saturday, despite me being wary. But she just wanted a day out as she was bored, yet still 4 weeks from her due date. She said that Baby was kicking like mad everytime I started the car !
By 11pm on Saturday night she went into labour and on Sunday the Wife and I were gifted with this little cutie :)
I'm still feeling like it isnt real. but it is, and I'm so HAPPY !!
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...psa6170a3f.jpg
Congratulations Pel. She is very cute. Did she have any problems being weeks early?
Mate, congratulations to you, your wife and most importantly, your daughter. I take it that all went very well for Mum and little Boy or Girl ? Whatever she or he is, that is a precious little bundle of joy. With the excitement of the kicking shown at the drag strip, you just may have a petrol head on your hands and you may have to have a booster seat made for the other seat in the MG.
Thanks Guys!
She was just 5lbs when born. But she is in good health. I think we may have a new petrol head in the family :)
Her name is Faith. I was hoping for her middle name to be Holley. But my Daughter decided on Gillian after my wife. :(
With me and the rest of the family being petrol heads, My wife being a football fan and my youngest Daughter being a football coach I dont think Faith will be getting too involved with Pink Stuff and Dolls etc !!! :)
She should be home tomorrow or saturday depending on blood tests etc. I cant wait to have her here in the family home for the first time. :)
congratulations to everyone in your family, pel. And my best wishes especially for the mom and baby.
Now adays 5 lbs is not usually any problem. Hell, when I was born over 64 years ago I was just 5-1/2 lbs and now I take up a lot more than my share of this world and I can type this and chew gum at the same time! ;)
Congratulations! That's a good story for her baby book, kicking wildly with each start of the 'B! I know you're prepared to spoil her rotten, but also to be wrapped tightly around her little finger.
Congrats to the family Pel! I wish my grand dad was running 9.60's at the dragstrip when I was a kid!:LOL::LOL:
What an awesome thread this has become! An incredible story of racing tenacity where we're all pulling for a 9.5 run only to be topped off with the picture and news of a precious new granddaughter. All us grandpas (and grandmas too) are feeling your joy - just when you thought it couldn't get any better God blesses your family with little Faith Gillian (I think Holley would have been an awesome middle name as well - but hey I was over ruled when I wanted to name one of my girls "Harlie" - well come to think of it, she really better off being a Katie).
Blessings to you and the family - glad to hear all is well with mom and baby. 9.50 next season for sure!!
Regards,
glenn
Oh my goodness !!
Thanks for those lovely and kind words of support guys :)
I read those last posts just now and I cant see my pc screen properly because there must be a cold breeze in the room. My eyes are filled with water for some reason........ OK, I'm back now after a 2 minute break to get myself together.
My Grand Daughter has been the best thing to have happened to me since my 4th and last child was born 22 years ago.
Faith is just so perfect. That little Girl is in for a whale of a time from me and Gill for a good few years to come.
So the next goal is a 9.5 timing ticket!!
I took the car out for a 9.5 attempt last week. But it didnt go well. As the old MGB gets quicker, my pre flight checks become more important (some of my friends say anal, but I say important) so I do not deviate from them.
When I arrive in my pit area I fill the fuel tank and do the usual check on oil and coolant levels. I then check the brake fluid level and set the tyre pressures. Before it comes off the trailer I look underneath with my torch to look for any traces of leaks from the rear axle. Then I roll her off the trailer and go for a test fire (hood already propped open) so i can observe the engine while running. I normally hold the rpm around 1100 by hand on the carb until I can feel the heads getting warm. At this point the engine will idle at 1000rpm so I can have a close look at hoses and belts. Then I normally give it some gas and rev the engine up and down while looking for any problems.
But this time I didnt even have to look further than the blower drive belt at idle. It was wobbling and skipping teeth ??
It only took 5 seconds for me to see the crankshaft pulley was running way off centre. So I cut the engine and had a closer look. The pulley sleeve onto the crank nose was split wide open. Potential disaster averted, car pushed back onto trailer. Me having cups of tea and crewing for other friends all day now.
Long story short. All damaged stuff now removed. Crank snout running true with no damage. Replacement pulley now fitted along with assorted gaskets etc.
I took her out to my local industrial area today and got TDC set and the dissy fitted and set my ign timing. So I'm now ready for the next race day. I'm hoping to put her on the dyno next Thursday so I can get some idea of where peak torque occurs so I can alter my gear shift to suit.
19th and 20th October will be my last race days for this year. Then its winter modifications time :)
1st on the list is Wheelie bars.
2nd on the list is Zoomies
3rd on the list is roll cage mods to add a door bar to the drivers side.
4th on the list is fibreglass doors and tailgate with lexan windows.
5th on the list is new slicks.
6th on the list is to make a new carb to blower plate with nos injectors fitted.
7th on the list is to collect a 9.5 timing ticket next year :)
I will hopefully be back here next week to show some dyno info so I wll at last know what this modified 3.9 litre (238Ci) engine is putting out??
Regards to all you folk
Perry
Perry, awesome pass and congrats on that sweet little grand daughter! We've had a child a year so far the last 3 years and they are great! Your car is awesome! I hear ya on the pre flight checks. I prefer to do that as well but my brother who usually takes my vette out doesn't. I want to kick him in the ding dong everytime something doesn't work at the track. I'll ask him if he checked this or that and I always get why would I need to check that. One of those smartest dumb mofo's you know if you know what I mean. Good luck on the dyno!!
Yep, good catch with the pre-flight! Could've been nasty to say the least.. I'm not certain if I've said thanks for all the photos and videos and keeping us informed of the tune-ups and dyno info etc. etc.... You make us all a part of your team in a way and we all get to share / enjoy the ride!
So, Thank You for that!
Well !
The Dyno session was very interesting indeed :)
Despite the advice from my V8 Guru's I chickened out and ran the timing retarded. I have been runing with the ign timing at 19 degree's all in. My Guru's have said I should be running 32 degree's with the boost and nitrous. And not to retard lower than 28 degree's. But I set it at 25 degree's and did a power pull. What a wimp eh :)
I could tell that it was still too retarded as I still had blue flames coming out of the 12 foot exhaust extensions which were ducted into the extractor hoods. And the hoods got blown away despite being weighed down with car batteries. And you can hear that the engine is lazy with the retarded timing. But I'm very happy with the results from today. The only thing I'm not happy with is the damage to one of my tyres. As the car hit 148mph on the rollers the tyres ballooned (as slicks do) and one of them clipped the inner wheel well as you will see in the video. So Martin Aborted the run a few seconds short as he saw the smoke. I now know that there is still mo0re to come form this engine when I grow some balls and run the timing where it should be. You cant blame me for being cautious can you? After last years blown engine, then the new engine breaking pistons etc and the expense of the rebuild to get where I am today I couldnt bear to think that I might have been pushing the engine to the ragged edge once again. And i get to still have an engine for next season now :)
I can now brag that my modified Rover 3.9 litre engine is in the 500's at last WOO HOO!!!!
Dyno plot and vid attached. I think I need a lie down now folks !
I'm the old geezer in the black sweat shirt with Wizards of Nos on the back ;)
Regards to all

Perry's MGB V8 on the dyno 520hp with 544 ft/lbs - YouTube
I'd think that you might be in danger of burning exhaust valves running hard at only 25 degrees. For sure you're not getting all the power, as lots of energy is going out the exhaust.
Nice dyno runs. I can see where you'd be leary of going all out on the 3rd go round. But, you won't know until you try it.
Just a quick update before the winter shut down and work on the car.
I took the MG to the track on Sunday. The headwind was (get this) 40mph !!!!
I didnt want to blow the tyres away on the launch so I dropped the nitrous from 100hp to 25hp for the initial hit. I also increased the build time for the full 175 shot from 0.7 of a second up to 2 seconds. Then I increased the ign timing up by just 2 degree's to make it 27 degree's all in. Still way short of the 32 - 36 degree's I should be running i know.
But it was the last RWYB of the year. The rain was on and off and I only had one shot at a run. I puched her off the line and she ran a real smooth 10.4 seconds. 60 foot was 1.50 seconds as opposed to the high 1.3's I normally run.
As I crossed the finish line I had to turn the windshield wipers on as the rain had come back. I drove straight back to my pit area and onto the trailer as I knew the track would close by this late time of 2.30pm with fresh rain.
I was very happy with the 10.4 given the track and weather conditions.
I now have the parts to start making my Zoomies. The MG will run again on the Dyno when the Zoomies are fitted and then its rear axle out for wheelie bars :)
For the next few days it will be Halloween stuff for me and the family. The Pumpkin carving started last night.
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...ps5f5250da.jpg
http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/b...psd2bfef24.jpg
Love the Pumpkin carving! Quite the artist there!!!
Glad you got one last run in and the results are still respectable. Now sit back and enjoy being with the family!!
Hi Guys!!
Just a quick update. Halloween was a great success. We had a fantastic evening outside the house entertaining families who came calling.
We did some old skool stuff like "splat the rat" and also made up a big witch face with a hole in the mouth to a bucket behind so kids could throw balls into her mouth. It was very cold so the "bobbing for apples" was in a bowl of flour and icing sugar :)
All of the pumpkins got a lot of comments which was good.
Then it was car time again. I have had to work every weekend since Halloween so I have had to farm out some jobs like getting the zoomie pipes cut to the right angle and getting the wheelie bar brackets laser cut to save me some time cutting and filing. The overtime pay cover this :)
The zoomies should be finished in 10 days and the wheelie bar mounts should be here next weekend if all goes well.
I was going to spend this weekend (my birthday weekend) working on the MG, but I ended up spending today working on a friends 1960's London Taxi restoration project by getting all of the lights working. This taxi has been stored outside for 12 years. It took me 6 hours to get the lights working. Then I had 4 hours welding chassis repair sections onto a friends Mercedes van to get him through the MOT test.
Tomorrow I will be working on a friends Slingshot to finish the chassis welding and get the front suspension fitted.
Then I will have my birthday time with the family for fun and presents etc !!If I dont get a chance to comer back next month I will now wish you all a merry Christmas and a happy new year folks.
Best wishes
Perry & Family
I'm now going downstairs to open my birthday presents etc.
Thank you, Perry. Best wishes for a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year to you and your whole family.
And Happy Birthday to you!!!
And thanks for the report about your Halloween. It sounds like you folks over the pond are still having a great fun time in spite of all that tea we threw into Boston Harbor. Sorry about that, but out of hand taxes can make people a little crazy! ;)
If you get a chance, post some pics of the London Taxi and the Slingshot.
Will do nick. I'll be back on the Taxi and the Slingshot tomorrow so I'll take my camera.
My birthday is today 30th November.
The Slingshot is now stripped back to bare bones as we have been modding the chassis. Its been a good learning experience this year getting it to run. But we found several problems with the SBC like oil seeping from the rear of the head gaskets? and the chassis actually snapping on a test run !!
We made a solid chassis table to do the rebuild and tomorrow we will remove the 9" rear and flip the chassis on the table to finish the welding of the new bars.
Here is the slingshot from a test day earlier this year. I have driven this and its a scary ride I must say !
The 10.9 felt like an 8 second pass from inside the car. The transbrake launch at only 1800 rpm felt very hard. You can see in the slo mo video that I had not even touched the pedal off the line as the flaps on the bug catcher are not really open. As I ran down the track I tickled the loud pedal and each time I did the rear tyres let go and the front wheels got very loose. I'm used to driving a door slammer. This thing felt like it was made of rubber ??
But despite the lack of throttle it ran a 10 at 113mph?? SCARY :)
Kiwi's Slingshot - YouTube
Cool slo-mo of the dragster, Perry. It does look very "compliant". When I see that I always imagine ways to synchronize and harmonize all those vibrations and flexures to get the most positive outcome.
Ministry of Transport test. Much like a state inspection like we have in Pennsylvania and many other states; they check for safety and emissions to make sure the car is "roadworthy".
Well, it's into tomorrow for you, so perhaps it's late but....
Attachment 60051
AH! instead of the D.o.T. they have the M.o.T., thanks Nick... And again, Happy Birthday Pel...
Happy birthday Pel. Keep at it and post when you get the chance.
Well happy birthday to you Perry and I hope you and your family have a marvelous Christmas and New year break. Is the owner of the rail a Kiwi as I noticed the name of the You Tube link ?
Thanks for the birthday wishes guys. I have just about finished watching my birthday DVD's now. I love Film. And I like getting DVD's as presents so I'm pretty easy to please at times like this. I like pretty much all types of movies. But I'm very fond of old Sci Fi stuff. I got about 12 DVD's on my birthday. But my faves are two remastered Sci Fi disks. The "Forbidden Planet" and the original version of "The day the earth stood still" to replace my old VCR's of these movies. And I found myself a DVD of the old classic "This Island Earth" to top off my birthday DVD's :) Some may think thats sad, but I just love the rich colours and clarity of these old films from way back when. I'm also a fan of Ray Harryhousen special effects so you can guess what other films I cherish in my collection.
Whiplash! The owner of the Slingshot is nicknamed Kiwi because of his addiction to his old project, which was a McClaren Hill Climb car with a SBC fitted. Bruce McClaren was a Kiwi hence the nickname :)
So Back to the update on the MGB. The Zoomies are now made and I test fired today. The header plates are still in stock form and need hogging out to port match my cylinder heads which I will do next week. They need about 3mm / 1/8th inch trimming off all 4 sides to be big enough for my heads. But they sound ok. I'll be fitting lambda and EGT bungs on them next week as well. Then I need to move some pipes and wires for better clearance and then I can wrap them in heat tape up to the under side of the hood and polish the tops of the pipes. The primary pipes are 1 3/4" and are just 16" long. I think thats about the least resistive exhaust system I can fit on the MGB.

The original "The Day the Earth Stood Still", is a favorite of mine also.. a lot like that MG of yours!
The view out the windshield is crowded now! LOL..
