    new guy!

just wanted to introduce myself and say that i am looking forward to picking your brains. i am in iraq working for a contractor and trying to fill my time. i have been thinking of different cars to build when i get home and about a month ago i ran across a rat rod, no question anymore. so now i know what i want to do but can not start for another year so i want to figure out through you guys what are the do's and dont's. thanks. the avatar is a picture of what happens when you don't lay down your arms when you are asked. i will post a few pics from the beautifull city of fallujah, lol.

Welcome to the forum, and I certainly don't envy you your current digs. All of you, be it military or civilian employees who are making this sacrifice are to be commended and thanked. Hopefully we will get the hell out of that God-forsaken part of the world real soon and get all of you home, where you belong.

As you have probably gathered from some of the posts on this forum and others, that R word causes some to rile up. Not me. I "get" the genre in general, but agree with the others that some rats give the entire population a bad name. We really don't care what you call a car, just so it is built well and is safe to drive. You will find the guys and gals on here to be super nice, respectful, and knowledgeable. I.ve never met one of them in person, but enjoy the diversity of personalities alot.

I don't think you will be resurrecting the one in the picture any time soon. . Next time they will probably heed the drop your arms orders. And, I'll bet your comment about the temperature over there is right. No wonder those people are so darned hostile, heat must have cooked their brains a little.

Glad to see you are planning your rod when you return. I know doing that helped get me through my time in the Marines in the '60's. (that, and wanting to get back to my Girlfriend ) Do you have any ideas yet about the kind of body, engine, etc? Two that I particularly like are the ones I will post below. The "desert car T" has inspired the direction my Project $ 3K bucket is taking, and the truck has inspired my '39 Dodge truck. (kind of on the back burner until the T is done) I found these pictures on line a while back, and the look of them just hit me as being cool and imaginative.

Anyways, welcome again, and get your butt home safe and sound. By the way, where IS your real home in the States?

thank you for the kind words. something about the particular type of rod i like, enter the "R" word, just grabs me. i do enjoy the nice and shiney jobs but something about the rats in bare form just gets me going.

as for an idea, well like everyone i have a ton..lol.. two vehicles i plan. this will probably piss a bunch of people but i want to mix old and new. i want to do a tudor 31-34 4 door with a 03 cobra drivetrain. it would be different! plus my cobra puts out 512 to the wheels so it would be a rocket. the second one, which will be much more of a challenge, will be a duece and a half. the old military 2 1/2 ton would make a bad ass "R"rod. it is just going to be a much larger scale like the blastoline guys.

oddly enough it is easier for me to get my hands on the duece than it is for the tudor. if anybody has any suggestions please let me know.

yeah i previously thought about the same drivetrain in a a/c cobra but i have found another project. that is the way it always happens, to much time and you change your mind. but i am a ford man through and through.
