Welcome aboard TXB
I'm with dcon on the Flowmasters, they've got one of my favorite sounds. Here's a link to their website, lots of pages of info, and some wav files so you can hear the sound. http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/cgi-bin/flowmaster That being said you should hang around some car events and see (or hear actually) what other cars have that appeals to you. Just because dcon and I like the sound of Flowmasters doesn't necessarily mean you will. Then there are other factors that affect sound. A crossover (or H pipe, X pipe, etc.) will change the tone. This is a pipe that connects the two sides of the exhaust system together, usually just aft of the transmission, depending on where there's room. While the racey guys can give you all sorts of reasons for this setup, it sounds like you're more interested in the exhaust tone. The crossover tends to "mellow" out the exhaust note by evening out the exhaust pulses, removing the "stacatto-ness", without diminishing the sound level.
You probably should search around your area for a shop(s) that do a lot of exhaust work on hot rods and muscle cars. You'd be surprised how helpful, and knowledgable, people who work on this stuff all the time can be.Your Uncle Bob, Senior Geezer Curmudgeon
It's much easier to promise someone a "free" ride on the wagon than to urge them to pull it.
