    440 74-Jensen Mopar timing chain

     



    I appologize in advance for my poor english.
    Have a problem with my newly construckted 440 Mopar for a jensen Interceptor rebuild. Same engine in Chrysler, Playmounth and Dodge.

    The engine got a edelbrock power pacage (roughly 400hp) with high pressure combustion. And after startup it wont run propperly.

    Here is my theory. When I installed the timing chain there were mulitple marks on the crank sprocket. And after a check in the manual on the original setting and placement of the sprocket keyway I assumed the markings as in the first picture.

    BUT, after checking several mopar 440 settigs on the net they always use the marking 0 . And as you see on the pic thats not the case here.

    This meaning that if i use the 0 mark the cam sprocket will get 36?? degrees erlyer cykle.. But if this is a high pressure combustion setting maby this is right?

    I tryed the 0 setting before i put the engine in the car, and turned it.. and the compression seemed right in both settings.. But when I ran it in this setting (pic), It was difficult to get an calm idle speed. And the lifters sound like they have too much clearence, (lifters have been tightend by hand in freemode until the clearence is gone and then tightened with 3/4 turn each).

    I have also tested the pressure in the cylinder with a gauge and its even 10Bars = roughly 145 psi on all cylinders. All plugs have eaqual cumbustion with a RICH fuel/air ratio.

    Your English is far superior to my Norwegian.
    By using the rectangular stamp mark on the crankshaft sprocket, you have retarded the camshaft 4 degrees from the "straight up" position which used the zero stamp mark. This position will make less cranking cylinder pressure and less low end power, but will slightly increase top end power and extend the upper rpm range of the camshaft slightly. Edelbrock does not recommend using either the advance (triangular or delta stamp mark) or retard (rectangular stamp mark) settings with their Performer Plus or Performer RPM camshafts. They are very specific about using only the "straight up" circular stamp mark.

    Thanks! Did not have theese papers when I installed. Then I guess the car's up running this weekend
