    rear-end ratio

     



    just wondering if anyone could expain the procedure to find the gear ratio of a rear-end,with-out pulling the cover.

    Check to see if the rear end has the factory metal tag still attached to it, if it does you can check the codes and they will tell you what the gear ratio is. For a rough guess, you can count the revolutions of the front yoke as compared to the revolutions of the tire, not real scientific, but it will get you in the ballpark.

    Remember that if it is an open differential, and only one wheel is turning, then you have to double the number of wheel turns, or is it half? I can never remember unless I am doing it! At any rate, a locked or posi differential will be the actual numbers, but with an open differential you will have to apply an adjustment to the number
