Yeah that rear corner not going fully down is very typical and a sign of worn hinges. If you can find good, original Ford hinges it would be best. Some of the repop ones aren't very good and wear out at the rivets in short order. The ones from Drake seem to be the best, though not sure how he's surviving these days.
As for the struts, I've not use the ones for the hood, just the trunk on one of my coupes about 25 years ago. No undue stress that I could detect. The most effort is when getting them started on the downstroke, but that same issue prevails with the original Ford springs too.Your Uncle Bob, Senior Geezer Curmudgeon
It's much easier to promise someone a "free" ride on the wagon than to urge them to pull it.
