Just Bought a 67 Merc Monterey Ragtop

Added a ford to my chevy stable... Sort of- Its actually a Merc, and its a BIG merc too!

    390 2bbl 3spd auto

There are some more pics i took yesterday from where i found it in my album here:
    http://www.clubhotrod.com/photopost/...er=489&thumb=1

The guy had $4500 on the for sale sign, i got it for $4k today when i pulled out a giant wad of $100 bills.

Nice car- Needs some interior cleanup, Engine tune up, brake tuneup, and body/engine detail- but other than that, its a real nice solid cruiser. Looks to be origonal 48k mile car. the guy i bought it from had it for 5 years- didn't drive it much, pretty much sat in his garage. He had bought it from his brother- who owned it for the 5 years before that (i got his name and number so i can ask questions about it) and a couple years before that their OTHER brother who ran a used car lot owned it (also got his name & number to call and ask questions on)
So anyway- got quite a history on the car.

I was too busy out cruising around today with the top down to take any new pics... I'll take some tomorrow and post em.

I'm thinking about throwing some 15x8 cragars w/ RWL tires on it to give it little bit more of a hot rodish look to it... But the factory hubcaps & white walls are growing on me too...

My old(sold it 2 years ago)1968 Oldsmobile Delmont 88 ragtop had fake cragars on it- and they really MADE that car....

I'm thinking they will do the same thing for the look on this car too. What do you guys think?

15" Cragars, or factory Hubs & whitewalls?

Pictures can be deceiving, but it looks like the top fits real well. That's a plus.

A car that size can take 17's easily, no white letters, lowered about 2". 18's might be a bit big. Think about grey center American Salt Flats. I saw a '67 Merc wagon last year, lowered 2" with those wheels and it looked great. If you'd have told me it would look that good I wouldn't have believed it, but to see it........cool!

    Then put on some flowmasters

It's much easier to promise someone a "free" ride on the wagon than to urge them to pull it.

Very nice looking Merc ya got there, I'm jealous!!! World Class Super Cruizer potential!! If it is as good mechanically as it is cosmetically you certainly got your money's worth.

My personal taste would be for a set of chrome reverse wheels with fake 3 bar knock offs. I just can't seen to let go of the 60's!! Have fun with yer new ride.....

Nice car!!! I'd say you got a good deal. I voted for the chromies with dog dish hubcaps. I'd use 50 Merc dog dish caps. I think all your ideas are good ones but I don't think you'll keep the stock wheels on it very long. There's not much else you can do to improve it other than a custom paint job.

Nice old cruiser ahsom70, those old rag tops make great everyday cruisers. My wife drives our '66 fury III everyday and got rid of a 2 year old grand Am because it didn't drive as good. They don't make cars that nice to drive any more.

You've got a good memory Bob!

Actually... Dispite all that I said about them before- I probably WILL go with 40 or 50 series flows for this car- just because i don't plan to build the engine much other than switching to a 4bbl , but I want it to sound like its built

Anyway- some good idas here- keep em coming.
I'm heading outside now to begin my cleanup stage- i'll take some top-down pics and post em later today!

    Later!

It fits.. Barely- But it fits!

Got it out today for some top down fun, and a $45 gas fillup

Appears to be some bad wiring... I'm having the same problem i had with my girlfriends camaro last year- after i run it and it gets hot- Next time i go to start it- it kills all the power to the car- go wiggle the power wires- power will come back on- but when you try to bump the starter- all the power goes out again. Did that a bunch of times, wiggled different stuff- and then it came alive again.

Also discovered the pass side tailpipe is RUBBING on the pass side rear tire... so thats gotta be fixed- and as i found out yesterday, i need to pull the rear drums and see why they are dragging.

But other than those minor hangups.. doing good!
