You may find it hard to get a '36 Pontiac cause most are restored. A good first hot rod ( I think ) would be a T Bucket, just because they seem simple to build, now I have never built a T but, I do know that there is a kit for a bolt up kit ( minus engine, interior and few other things ) that a company makes, located at www.tperformance.com and it is yes a kit but, if you do not have the access to the tools or the expertise to build it the old way, this is right up ur alley, they also sell the bodies, interior and everything else to build them besides the paint. The kit comes with a body and frame but, if you wanted to build your T without a kit, they sell all parts. Now u can pick up just about any old car ( 1930's-1949 ) and rod that. You don't know what you've got til it's gone
