Naming your hot rod...

I was talking with my dad the other day about all the cars he has owned and the various trends he remembered growing up. We came across a picture of his 60 Pontiac Ventura Sport Coupe(sweet ride) and I noticed he had a name painted on it. He had "The Panther" painted in old english letters on the rear fender and then had misc pinstriping around the door handles etc... He said that another guy had a 50 Merc with "The Maverick" painted on it accompanied with a hand of four aces. I am personally into what I call "retro rods" and plan on giving my car the same treatment naming it "The Shark". Anyways, I was just curious if anyone remembers this period in hot rodding and had any names or stories to share?

My early 41 ford pickup I named smokey bacause it was so light and with the built 53 merc flathead I had in it, it would smoke the tires in all gears.

My brother had a 50 Hudson he called "Humming Bird". I called my 66 GTO "wild Thing" .........
Now I have a Camaro............I think I'll call it............... "Z-28".

I don't know how it came to be , maybee it just fits but my wife and I call the 55 ..........Laverne , I guess that's how you spell it.:p

My first car was named "Carrie's Curse"
That was my girlfriend, who considered it major competition.
She's mellowed through the years (30th anniversary upcoming)..
My latest hot rod...she calls it simply...
"That yellow POS"

I think I'll call my new Firebird the "Wounded Duck" for now. Maybe when it's done we'll have to rename it.

A good name for it would be

My gto is named Vanessa :confused: dunno why it was just something that came to mind the day i brought her home and i thought it suited her:whacked:

Had a old 83 Ford van that me and a friend cut the top off of.
It smoked real bad so we called it the mosquito fogger.

I've never named any of mine, must not have wanted that sentimental attachment thing. Some of my friends have named many of my cars, but they must not be very imaginative. They kept coming up with the same name........................The Turd!!:LOL:

It was originally a column shift car until "Tech" tore the shifter off one night trying to bang second gear. Drove it home with a screwdriver for a gear shift lever. Right Tech?

Never named any of my cars either. My son is taking after me, only more so. Our dog, Charlie he calls 'puppy'. His little sister, evelyn, he calls 'baby'. all cars are car, except jeep liberties are 'jeep' . And chrysler minivans are 'mommy vans'. ONLY the chrysler ones, any color. Ford, chevy, et al are 'trucks'. Interesting to watch the mind develop.

Well ive been calling my mopar powered 24 dodge roadster the WMD after the Weapons of Mass Destruction that have yet to turn up.

Nah I aint lost it. Its still sitting in the backyard cause I thought it would be cool to use an extended model A frame and now the damn thing keeps flexing and cracking out every weld. I named it that because ive had more problems with it than any other car ever. Kinda like the war, just a bit more than we bargained for.

Hey but at least this is one WMD thats been found! As for the ones in Iraq, ill let them GI'S try to find 'em.

I've never named my vehicles but some had names when I got them.
My 40 Ford pickup was my older brothers truck in 62. He worked for Surrette Battery co. His name was Edward but the guys at work called him Deadwood. When he bought the truck (for $100) They called it "The Deadwood Stage". When I get it painted I'm going to put the name on it somewhere.
My 40 Panel truck was named Mildred after the original owner. Mildred was the postmaster and delivered mail with it . She parked it in 62 and it sat in the same spot till 84 when I bought it from Mildred's brother. It was used for 22 years and sat for 22 years.
BCAL from OZ posted a link to a Music video this morning about "Old Black Betty" A1935 Ford Roadster. That reminded me of a 62 Bonneville convertible I had that the po, Martin, named "Old Black Betty" even though it was dark blue. It got stolen. But that's another story I probably shouldn't tell here.

Best one I ever saw was on a buddy's 54 Chevy back in high school. In the lower right corner of the trunk lid he had the guy from Mad magazine that stands on the street corner leaning on a lamppost in a zoot suit twirling along watch chain. The car's name was Twat Twidler

I truly think that the car must earn its name. It really can't be given

My 55 earned the name "The shoe leather express" because in the first couple years I drove it, I ended up putting almost as many miles on the soles of my shoes (and it always seemed to be raining and dark too :mad: ) as I did that truck. This all due to the fact that I either:

A. overheated it and blew the radiator hose (First night I took it out),
B. ran out of gas (2X) (and yeah I know I'm a "slow learner"), or
C. shoved a rod through the side of the old 283.

It is important to note that even though "C" was the last time it left me walking; it seemed to save the "best" :rolleyes: for last and left me walking for 6 months while I saved up the money for a new motor. GAWD I LOVE THAT TRUCK!!! :LOL: :LOL:

The Firechicken hasn't really "earned" a name yet; but, the capital finance comittee (my wife) seems to have dubbed it "the money pit". I dunno why....

My parents are both from the 4dr sedan generation, the BIG sedans. Unfortuantly, both cars are well worthy of the name pimpmobile. His Grand marquis is getting dual exhaust and turbo mufflers this week, and hers is getting a cd player/chenger. so, i dont know which one needs the name. Can someone help me out here?:whacked:
