Moving on to pics of the top edge....
Here's the top edge - obviously the bondo is chipping away...

There is some cracking on the underside of the hinge hole

A little grinding revealed a skim coat of bondo over at least 90% of the surface.

For the record, I didn't expect perfection from a 75 year old used trunk lid but I did expect the seller to be more honest in the assessment of it's condition. He repeatedly said, "No rust, No dents, No bondo." I tend to take people at the word unless the give me reason to believe otherwise. I have another friend who says all sellers are liars.....
Now, in an effort to make "lemonade" I would appreciate suggestions on ways to effectively repair this within my skill set....
