WOW did directions come in that box?? post up the second picture a little bigger...can't quite get a good enough look at it!
Just connect the dots! Seriously looking good.
Oh, it's one of those "kit" cars! Very ambitious project and it looks like you are over the hump now. Post up some bigger pictures, would love to see more.
Don
This is a car that I bought sight unseen.
Yes it is an ambitious project, but we're making good progress!
Here's a few pics:
Looks like your off to a good start. Those body panel patches are above my skill level, but it will be very cool when your done to have an original 33 American Austin!
Keep posting pics, this will be a great thread to follow.
What a cool little body style; what are your drivetrain plans?
Drive train?
- 450HP Ford 351W
- Custom built C4 Trans
- Ford 9" posi
Yeah...it's a bit too much power but that's one of my faults.
We're planning a 2.5" chop. Something like this:
Is that proper door gap??? Lol. J/K nice find and good job.
That's going to be killer; make sure you keep posting pics. Great job so far!
At least it was only one box, it could be worse!! I like it, how many years had they been in business when that was made?
Actually it was 2 boxes and NO directions!
I can't say that I know much about the American Austin other that in England it was called an Austin 7 because it had only 7 HP.
Apparently cars were taxed on HP so the Austin 7 was a way to minimize taxes.
Don't let our government get any ideas.
Anybody know how many were produced?
Actually, our goverment already had that idea! That's why 428 CJ's and the like were "ONLY" rated at 335 hp. All the manufacturers were "under rating" the horsepower numbers, the government was investigating taxable horsepower but realized enforcement was going to be miserable. :whacked:
I'd question the reliability of the Austins 7 horsepower number.:HMMM:
BTW, Your car is going to be awesome! Great Job so far! Keep up the good work! :3dSMILE:
Topless in progress: 2 1/2" chop
Nice car, this is one of my favorites also. This will be fun to watch.
Ken
Neat project ...... reminds me of a cut down 31 ford tudor .......
REGS
Very cool project!! There was one here in Minnesota 20 or more years ago with a huffed hemi in it. Just loved to see it come to a rod trot. I'll see if i can find pics of it. I'll be looking of updates on this one!!!!
Ron
top is tacked in place
Nice work.
Any recommendations for filling the big hole in the roof?
You could try searching the boneyard to see if you can find a car roof with a similar enough contour to cut out a replacement panel. I've seen it done but never tried it.
I'm not that familiar with the structure of these cars but a light weight tube or two might be a good idea before skinning the roof. A card board template to take to the yard would cut down on the guess work.
Ron
I'm pleased with the progress
I'm removing the panel seams then I'll replace the firewall, fabricate the rear wheel tubs and fill the roof next.
Lots to do
Check evil bay for model a roof filler ...... it should be very similar just need to cut the size down.
Ratty 46
slow progress: Lots of test fitting.
You see these very little cars around from time to time. There is one here that shows up at most of the show and shines. The little Coupes like you have are probably the most common and the coolest as well I think. Most of the Roadsters found there way onto the Drag Strip and there are at least a dozen or so still running.
There is Tons of information on the web and a few web site dedicated to the American Bantam. Here's a couple of pictures.
Takes a brave man to chop a car so small that only midgets can get in when they are stock. They were advertised when they were new as the first MicroCar. Good find and keep the progress reports coming very cool little car!!!
RS
Here's a few more Austins:
does anybody have a picture of this ^^^ HEMI powered Austin from the rear?
I found this pic from a couple years ago. MOST of my freinds who saw this said I was crazy...wait...make that ALL of my friends!
Cool wheels....should cut down on rolling resistance.....traction may suffer though.
I removed the seams and widened the rear 3" then chopped and widened the rear window 1"
I'm pleased how the rear pan turned out. The rear is all tacked and now starting on firewall.
Doors next
I'm looking forward to lots of welding and grinding
are those old school slot mags or rebops?
that car is looking cool.
it WILL be one sweet ride.
I will keep checking for updates.
Later**)
The slots & tires are some that I've had lay'n around for years
Here is a lesson in lead
Nice work....Keep us updated..
Most of the fabrication is done.
I must say that I'm pleased how the doors came out.
The hinges, latches and inner door panels were the biggest challenge.
My saving grace were the Model A door hinges I got from Blue Chip Engineering. They are steel rather than cast iron or bronze so I was able to modify them as needed.
still lots of finish welding and grinding to do
Cool. Clever place for the battery! Nice work on the body. I know how much time and work is needed for these old steel bodies, not to mention all the chopping modifications!
This is the most famous Austin in the UK, built 1977 ish
