I just built a 90 model Mrgoodwrench crate motor 350 4 bolt main SBC for my 73 Nova I used flat tops and cam was a Blueracer WG 1051 with 244/252 Duration and 516/525 lift I used a double Timing chain with 3 keyway slots I used keyway 0 I got it running well and starting just right but with a timing light the timing mark is way to the left about 3 inchs from the timing gage on the cover any ideas

Did you use the 0 line up mark on the gear as well as the 0 keyway? If not the cam to crank phasing will be "out in left field".

The timing mark relates to the crank position, the timing being that far off would indicate that your running way advanced. Is the damper the one that came on the crate engine? If it's an older damper the keyway on the damper may be positioned differently, and is giving an incorrect reading.

you could have the wrong timing tab on the engine chevy i think made 3 different timing tabs

If it runs good I agree, you might have the wrong timing pointer. Time to do the piston stop thing to find TDC and check it against the timing marks.

yep it much better to check the TDC and the damper to O on the pointer before the heads get screwed down .that bending over a car fender for old guys is for the birds trying to find TDC

Did the TDC and the mark is on 0 when I put the Timing chain in I use 0 keyway on the crank gear and had both marks on cam gera and crank gear pointing at each other

but did you check the damper to the pointer at TDC this has nothing to do with the chain

are you shure you have your timing light hooked to #1 and not #8 or#2......ted
