    How come?

Did some searching and couldn't find answer. What was the original purpose of the roof inserts? Just to save metal or did they actually open? I saw some folks replace them with sunroofs. Thanks for info.

Nobody had a die and a press large enough to stamp a roof in one piece! They figured out later they could weld in the piece and seal it with lead.
