Check out this months issue of Car Craft; a junkyard Gen III 5.3 truck engine with nothing but a cam change made over 400hp. At 295hp stock, that's over 100hp with just a cam. These are awesome engines and they come right from the factory with aluminum heads and 6 bolt main caps. I bought one with 60,000 miles out of a 2002 Suburban for $550.00. There's one in this months Hot Rod (in a Ford Fairmont of all things)that has a used LS6 cam, a 70mm turbo, and no other mods making 600hp and dipping into the low 10 second range. Them Baby L-S1s are not so strong as you may think . And there are a lot of changes to be made to put a GEN III SB Chevy into a 1973 Nova . For what it would co$t to do so ? You could build a real strong 383 . And that 600 HP with that 5.3 323ci may be But what Kind of torque will it have . I know That 5.3 is one of are new GEN SB Chevy engines and it is a COOL one . But Car Craft did the same with a Lower C/R Junk yard GEN I 350 . And even better HP #s with a Junk yard Mopar 318 . Also the 4.8 SB Chevy the 5.3s little Brother we have some small trucks at work with them . They have no low end Torque . Even with the OD Trans and a 410 gear . But from 3000 to 6000 RPM they pull real good .
