I wouldn't use muriatic acid, way too corrosive. I was talking about phosphoric acid

Ace hardware carrys a rust neutralizer/converter that comes in spray bottle. it works also.

i used muratic acid to help clean the scum off a buddies boat a long time ago, the boat was on a trailer in his driveway, i was working away with a very long handled brush cause i knew the stuff was pretty strong
. i stepped in a puddle of it on the concrete never thought much about it just on the soles of my running shoes .
after a while i thught i could smell something, my shoes were smoking ruined a good set of nikes that day.

....Ok, I went to a Napa Auto Parts Store & the guy said several of the local mechanics shops asked him to carry a product called Rust Treatment that's made by Permatex, item # 756-1671. So I tried it and it worked great!
.... As per instructions I just sprayed on three light coats & let it set for 24 hours. The next day the center section had a dark black tint to it but NO rust!!
THANKS AGAIN Everyone! Bill
ps, LOL Canadianal, sorry to hear about your tennis shoes
