Project $ 3 K Is Underway

Thanks Ken. I was amazed at the quality of all the cars there. What happens is that we get lots of winter residents from other parts of the country and they bring their hot rods with them. That was the case with Dick LaHaies car and also the '33 Ford with the Brewster front grille.......both came in on trailers for the winter. Also, those guys tend to have a few more bucks and the cars reflect that.

I did have some very nice comments and questions asked. Lot's of old time rodders at this show who asked about the split bones and suspension details. Very nice people, all.

Bet you are getting excited about the big one you are going to be in, huh? That is really something to be proud of.:)

Yes, to be honest I can't believe they accepted it. I would really like to win something there.
I have this thing almost completely torn down. I tried different things to clean the primer but I have worked on it so much it was pretty thrashed, so I decided to re spray it this morning. There is so much more to do and only 4 more days till move in.
Did any of those guys have one of my new folding car trailers?

I think all were driven to the show today, didn't see any trailers. Not sure what they own though. I didn't know you had a car trailer too. I knew about the bike , atv, and utility trailers, but not those. How the heck did you design a folding trailer for a car?

It's new for 2008, it will be at the GNRS. It's pretty neat, if I have to say so myself. I will PM you with some photo's after the show if you want to see it.

Yeah, please send me some pix. As for being awake, that's one benefit to getting older, only need 4-5 hours per night. :D I also don't sleep well until I hear Dan get home from the shop. No matter how old they get they are still your kids. He's over there doing some stuff to get his rear axle hung and seemed to want to work alone tonight so I came home. I think I bug him sometimes with my suggestions.........he likes to quietly think through some problem. :D Or maybe it's my choice of music. :LOL:

Really? Wow. :) All I have now are some garage shots, but I have to take it to a nice location like the beach and get some pictures anyway. I've been talking to a magazine guy who is from another State and he would like me to take some nice shots to send to him along with the history of it. As soon as we get a nice sunny day I plan to do that and would be honored to send you some. Thanks for asking, I'm flattered that you would ask.

Since I voted for the Halibrands I'm glad to see you chose those. They just fit the car, and as much as I like wires, since they have found popularity again they might be getting overdone somewhat. I have a set I am saving too and might put them on my '27 when I redo it. BTW, how is your sedan project coming? If you would stop traveling around the world you could get some work done on it. :D :D

Not sure what your thinking is about "nice sunny day", direct bright sun light isn't the best for a quality posed shot. Here's some advice I've followed that worked well for me; http://www.cobracountry.com/fototips...-condensed.pdf Flash fill is especially useful on a black car.

Very good article Bob, thank you for that info. I'm really surprised to learn about using a forced flash in daylight, whodathunk? My camera has that option on it so I'll do that for sure. It also mentions getting up on a ladder. I can't transport one in the T, but the place I am thinking about, the beach area on Sanibel Island, has picnic tables. I can step up on one of those and get higher elevation. My Ex is a photography buff so I will borrow a tripod from her to minimize the shakes.

I might even entice one of the beach bunnies there to become an impromptu model. :D :D (no Bob, don't offer one of your "cuties!" :eek: ) Tomorrow is supposed to get back into the 70's, so I might go then.

Here's an example of the flash fill at work. The sun was low and to the left of this shot, filtered through some trees. It isn't the best backdrop but what the flash fill did was bring definition to the black side pipe and the tire vs wheel well, as well as define the front valence area and the rocker line. Makes the tire/wheels pop rather than be buried in the shadows.

I'd suggest a low, rear 3/4 view as well on you car. With the lowness and the bigs & littles, along with the lakes headers it would make a real nice shot.

Hey, Don, what is the model number on your battery? I have been looking back through this thread and found pics, but the model number is eluding me. I want to get one for the roadster...

Jim, in case he's away for some time I believe it's the PC680MJT, MJT has the automotive terminals, they have other suffixes for different connections.

Bob, I agree about the 3/4 rear shot.........I've taken a couple at the shop of that angle and I like it too. Makes the car look a little nasty with the big slicks and all. :D I was going to do some pictures today, but it is freezing out.................well, 60 degree freezing anyway. Maybe later in the week.

Yesterday I did something I have been thinking about, I removed the baffles from the headers to see if the car would be too loud to drive that way. I had built the baffles and the car was pretty quiet with them in, but I was just curious. After I removed them I put the turnouts back on and of course Dan and I had to take it out for a test drive.

It was like 40 degrees and we must have looked like a couple of nuts, but what a difference it made. The sound is a little on the edge of too loud, but man is the performance better. Off idle power is much improved and the car just pulls harder all the way through the gears. I let Dan drive it and told him to push it hard (we got on a side road in the industrial park).......all I could hear from the drivers seat were giggles. :LOL: The baffles are staying out unless the local authorities feel otherwise. :eek:

One note on my reference, the MJ in the suffix is for the metal jacketed version, the T suffix by itself would be without metal jacket.

As Pops noted, I like the Odyssey as well, though I go with the 925 series just from a personal "security" point of view, and in the '32 '33 & '36 I didn't have the same space constraints. It has a nominal 50% higher rating across the board (100% in reserve capacity) in a package that's just slightly bigger. We've discussed this before, but might be worth mentioning again. Since these are a dry cell battery they can be mounted in any position. If you put the 925 on it's side it is only 2 inches thicker than the 680, so if you've got room in that direction, and you would like the higher electical capacity, that might be worth considering. As Pops has indicated, the 680 has worked well so far for him, so it's just a matter of space and personal preference.

Uh huh. They even recommend the larger sizes if you have more power draining accessories like AC or a bumped up stereo system. Very impressive batteries though. In the beginning I didn't have my alternator wired up and I started and restarted my T a bunch of times and the battery never got too low to crank it fine.

When I spoke to the man at the factory his first words were "forget everything you knew about batteries." I was still skeptical and considered putting a second one in just in case. Now I know better.

Glad to hear a little COOL weather dosen't stop you from having some fun. Personaly I hate mufflers. Why work so hard to get the engine to run strong then strangle it by not letting it exhale.

Thanks for the link Bob, that is a fine battery, I am leaning towards one. Any links on multi-amp multi-media car audio installation? I am getting close to starting mine, a couple of weeks. I still need to pic up the dvd player.

I have taken alot of shots of cars and that sounds like something I am going to try. There are alot of time with a digital that there are darkspots.

I'm coming in late on this but Don is right I have one of those in my truck. My motor is 412 cu. in. with 9 1/2 compression and it has not been a problem. I agree with you Bob if you have the extra room I would go with the larger series but if you don't the little guy works great. They just recommend keeping the primary lead as short as possible. I think you mentioned something like having the cables as close to 3 feet as possible one time Ken. I tried to get mine that short but ended up at about 4.5 feet. I did use @ gauge cable and ran the ground right to the starter bolt too.

Another nice thing is that they project a 3-10 year service life for these. In Florida (and probably other hot places like California) we are happy if a car or boat battery lasts 3 years. Some die as fast as 2 years.

The cables would only be about 18 inches long then. The alternative is to mount it similar to Don's on the right rear frame kickup. The cables would be about 4 1/2 feet then.:)

Another question on the batteries... They show some with "automotive" terminals and some with "female" terminals. The "automotive" are posts, but I can't see the pics well enough to understand the "female" design. Do they use the GM sidepost style ends?:confused:

Those pictures remind me of a photograph that I had in the '60's, I bought it from a buddy because it was so funny. It was undoubtedly the ugliest girl(I think it was a girl ?) that you have ever seen, and it looked like a normal photograph. It was always good for a laugh. I would be at some club or bar and the subject of girlfriends would come up and I would whip out this photo and tell the stranger "here's a picture of my girlfriend." I would act dead serious, and it was priceless to see the reaction on the guys face. He didn't want to be rude , yet you could see him ready to crack up at any second. :LOL:

It worked best when you acted all serious and went on about how she was the love of your life. Sometimes a buddy who was in the know would play along and act like she was really something special.

I was robbed at gunpoint in Pittsburgh after that and the robbers got my wallet and I lost the picture. Bet they had a good laugh when they went through my wallet and found that picture. :LOL:

I mounted mine horizontal under the dash in my truck next to the fuse panel so I didn't oose any interior room. My cable came out to almost 3' on the money.
