Denny, all those tips you guys gave me really helped. I thought the pan would have to come down, but it didn't. BTW, if anyone else ever has this to do, buy the tool. I would have if I had the time to wait for one to come UPS, but it worked out well.
Also, I was afraid fluid would come rushing out when the seal was removed......it doesn't. Hardly a drop came out.

The thing that I liked was that they didn't argue with us at all, they just jumped in and did what it took to make it right. He paid his head bodyman extra to come in at 3 am and straighten it out, and it was nice to see a business that tries to do things right.

Yep, we will probably use them for Dan's '29 when he gets to that point. It was fate that the first shop didn't touch them...........they would have never come out this nice, especially mine being gloss black.

Don and Don Jr. nice job. Did both of you start with new clean frames? I'm working on the chasis and rust removal now, and was looking for some pointers on preping and cleaning the frame. Did you spray the gold on your frame, or send out, Don? Steve.

Thanks also Steve. Yeah, Dan and I laid up and built both frames using 2 x3 3/16 wall rec tubing. The three of us did all the painting except for the bodies. Glad that phase is over, I am still coughing up different colored paints. :eek: Maybe now my sinuses can get back to normal.
If you can do it, I would strongly recommend taking the frame and suspension pieces to a sandblaster and letting them do their thing. To be honest, I should have done that, but we elected to sandblast our own stuff. Probably would have cost about the same, and we wouldn't have had to put up with all the dust and mess. Not the best stuff to be breathing. If you do that, etch prime it immediately though, as it will start rusting very fast.

Your sons T really looks sharp, love the blue paint and the white trim. A very sharp looking rod, looks to be a lot of fun. Now that we have seen the sparkling blue one, let's see an update on yours. Caught it on another site and it really looks good, especially the copper wheels. Looks like you only have a little bit more to do on it to get it on the road.
BTW, hope you enjoy a sunny and warm Daytona while I'm be freezing by butt of in PA. :mad: :CRY: :LOL: Maybe next year.:HMMM:
Don, we've had a beautifull fall. It has stayed relatively mild right up untill this week, with daytime temps around 65 to 70 degrees F at mid day. I was still driving the Wild Canary downtown on "chores" last week!!! The leaves have been really pretty, although we haven't had any frost yet. This week the temperatures have dropped to about 55 F at mid day, falling to around 38-40F at night. I am in the middle of a big engineering contract for a feeder plant that makes parts for Toyota up here in Ontario, so I've been to busy to play at hot rodding. Every morning I come down to my office and fire up the computer, and the first thing I check is the progress that you and the boys are making. Some really marvelous building going on at your place.---You have something to be proud of.---Brian

You know you're nearing the end of a build when you can turn the key to start it, and flip switches and things light up. :D :D :D Yesterday I painted my steering shaft and column support, and today I got them installed. Now I can turn the wheel and the front ones move. I also got my gas pedal painted and reinstalled, so now I don't have to speed it up at the carb, I can do it with the pedal.
Dan came over after work and did more work on my wiring. Now the taillights and license plate light work, the turn signals flash, and the fuel pump runs. I turned into a parts hander for him, as he did all the hard work. When he's working you just stay out of his way and keep the parts moving. :LOL:
Tomorrow night he and I are going to wire the electric fan and headlights, and that will be it for the wiring. If I get the brakes bled and adjusted I could maybe take the first ride around the block Sunday.
I ordered turnouts for my headers from Sanderson because I felt the headers would scorch my new paint the way they are aimed. The turnouts should not only move the hot gases outboard, but maybe quiet it down a little more.

Aren't three lone wolves an oxymoron or something? Both of your car's have turned out so well, and I'm sure Dan's will several time more. It's sad to see this coming to an end, but to see your car's on the road will be too cool. Good luck over the next few day's.

Hey, you guys aren't getting rid of me that easy! :LOL: :LOL: I still have a Dodge truck to build and my old '27 to put back in shape, so I'll be around for awhile yet. Bet I take a little breather in between builds though (physically and financially :eek: )
Tonight Dan and I worked on finishing up the wiring. For all practical purposes, it's done. Every switch now works something, but we still have to install the headlights after I paint them and the grille shell. But at least we have juice already there waiting. Dan did a nice job on it, and it was cool to see how someone who did it for a living does things. Whereas I cut the wires neat and short, he leaves some extra as service loops so that there will be extra wire to trim if you ever need to go back and fix something. I learned a lot watching him.
My exhaust turnouts came today from Sanderson, and I got them installed. Not only do they direct the flow of hot exhaust away from my paint, they also quieted it down even more. The sound now reminds me of some of the Cobra kit cars you see running around with sidepipes. I think it will be tolerable and somewhat legal sounding.
Finally, we decided to bleed the brakes, and thank God I always use silicone brake fluid. We had a couple of leaks, and my painted chassis would have been ruined with regular brake fluid. The first leak was in the front residual valve, I had the wrong fitting in the end of it.........got that fixed. The next leak was from the bleeder valve on the drivers side front wheel cylinder. Looks like someone cross threaded the bleeder valve, and it is not seating. They are brand new from Dennis Carpenter, so I will give them a call Monday. In the meantime, I have another wheel cylinder to put in there, and will probably do that tomorrow.
That is about it for tonight. Oh, we also got the fan shroud cut out and mounted the electric fan. If I had brakes I could take this thing for a little spin. :D

Right now any paint striping is a blessing but when the truck is done, it would be nice to have something to preserve all the hard work. Is silicone fluid interchangable with the regular stuff? Steve.
Some people say it causes soft pedal, but I run it even in my Jeep. It is more money, about $ 8-$10 a pint, but it also doesn't absorb moisture like Dot 3 fluid, so parts don't rust. The same brake fluid has been in my '27 for 17 years, and I still have good pedal.
But the big thing I like is that if you spill it on a painted surface it wipes right off. Regular fluid eats paint immediately, and is hard to remove if it does. As far as mixing it, I think there is some flushing procedure to get all the old fluid out, but I am not sure what that is. I started with a brand new, empty system, so I didn't have to do that.

I think I'll give it a try, since I'm replacing the entire system when the new front disc conversion goes on and the rear end is getting new lines and a new wheel cylinders, plus the brake power booster. I can't believe I've never heard of silicone fluid! Your build is a wealth of knowledge and fun to watch.

BTW, my Son found his silicone brake fluid cheaper at Advance Auto. He paid something like $ 7.95 a pint, and I paid $ 9.95 at NAPA. The official designation is " DOT 5 ". Like I said, there is a debate over how well it works, some people swear it is not the way to go, but others, like me, have used it for years with great success.

More little stuff got done today on my T. I painted the windshield stanctions and primed the windshield frame. I figure the glass shop will scratch up any new paint that might be on the windshield frame, so I will mask it off and paint it black after they install the new glass. I reshot my headlight bar while I was at it. It was ok, but now that the body looks better I wanted to do a better job on the headlight bar too. I still have to prep and paint my grille shell and headlights, and will get that done this week.
I needed a way to keep the radiator from pushing back under air pressure, so I used the stainless support rods from my '27 and modified them to fit. Tomorrow I have to help Don do some more stuff on his T, so I won't be back on mine until late tomorrow night. I still have that leaking wheel cylinder to fix, and that will be my main priority.
Here are some shots of what I got done today. Now I have to go remove some of the wrinkled $ 100 bills from my stash. (They make great litter box liners) :D :D

Thank you Brick. I don't think mine will be clean for very long either. I am rethinking my decision to paint it black, I already have some minor scratches on it from just touching it. I have never owned a black car, either hot rod or family car, and am just learning how much upkeep they need. When I worked at the body shop we wouldn't put a black car out front for pickup until the owner was on the way. They would get dirty just sitting there if left for any period of time.
Today Dan and Don worked on Don's wiring, and got a lot done. All the rear lights are done and they are now doing the start and engine circuit. It's coming out pretty well. While they were doing it I made some mounts for Don's headlights out of a '32 headlight bar I had. I cut the ends off and bent them 90 degrees like we used to do before we could go out and buy ready made ones. Now I just have to dress up the cut off ends and prep and paint them. I also made up his license plate mount and got that on. Just have to paint it now.
I decided to paint my windshield frame and if it comes back from the glass shop scratched I'll just mask and shoot it again. I had to install it to get the effect with the black paint job. I forgot how short the frame is, but I like it. Tomorrow I am going to tear into the front brake and see what's up with the leaking wheel cylinder.

Thanks. Hehe, we put out 3 folding chairs for us to sit on, and the two cats end up taking two of them for their own. We have to sit on boxes so as not to "disturb" them. :LOL: :LOL: They've turned into real shop cats, even starting our engines or running power tools don't wake them up anymore. :D
I have no illusions of beating Don's T. Might get him out of the hole because of traction, but once his hooks up he would be long gone. (never should have sold him that engine :D )

We're taking tonight off (the guys are both playing and I'm doing house chores :) ) but last night we got some more work done on Don's car. Dan now has the wiring to the point where all the lights work on the rear, and it starts on the key. Even got the aoogha horn working............scared the beJesus out of the cats. :LOL: :LOL:
Don and I got his fuel system wrapped up by mounting his Moon fuel block on the firewall and plumbing the obligatory red fuel lines to the two carbs. Also got his tranny dipstick mounted. Tomorrow night Don has to play again, but Dan and I are going over to finish up the gauges. We are behind on getting it to the upholstery shop, but getting it wired has to come first.
I think the shift knob, aooogha horn, and red fuel lines are Don's favorite parts of the whole car. Kids............................. (I like the nasty idle the best :D )

Thanks George. You're right, I was nervous mounting stuff to mine the other day too. I've learned one lesson from my Son Dan.........lot's of blue masking tape to protect stuff. He's a masking tape madman, but it does save a lot of scratches.
BTW, I didn't get to thank you formally for the part number of the KD seal tool. There is no way in the world it would have come out without using it. Thanks to you, Denny, Gastrick, and everyone who helped on that one.

No, unfortunately I went a little over the 3K............ok, a LOT over the $3K. I honestly have no idea whatsoever at this point, I stopped keeping track, but if I had to guess it would be $ 15,000. I figure that is pretty accurate because I know the withdrawls I have made from several savings accounts.
Don is right at $ 20,000.00 in parts. He is meticulous about record keeping, and we were just talking the other night about the figure, and he has spent $ 10,000 in this last 60 day push we have been doing on it, and he had spent $ 10,000 prior to that. Not too bad considering he has not cut any corners, like using TP 'complete '32 grille/radiator/insert setup, a TCI super streetfighter tranny, polished Edelbrock dual carb setup, etc. All relatively high dollar items. There is also a bunch tied up in the engine itself in high dollar parts.
The most surprising part to all of us is how much the little things add to the bill. There is rarely a day when we don't run to the hardware store or Lowes and drop $ 30-$100 on things like bolts and nuts, or blades for the air saw, or grinding discs. Even doing our own painting on everything but the bodies, we have a fortune in paint, hardners, thinner, mixing cups, etc.
Brian mentioned the 1-800 ordering thing, and it is really convenient. But it sure gets expensive. Both Don and I have a bunch of money in just shipping costs..........him more than me because he has been overnighting stuff to get it here quickly. None of this takes into account the things we don't figure into the total, like the gasoline we use getting to the shop every day, or the rent we pay each month on the shop, or the electric bill that climbs when we are welding or running the compressor a lot.
No, it isn't a cheap hobby, but few hobbies are. When I was really into fishing I used to say the fish that we kept cost us about $ 1,000.00 a pound.........by the time you factor in the boat, fishing gear, gas, bait, etc. However, I have to admit that fishing is looking better and better all the time.:LOL: :LOL: :LOL:
