I would suggest you build something yourself (as much as possible) and you'll learn alot along the way. Plus you will have much more pride in knowing that you built it your way, and can fix it if you have to. When I was young the guys that worked on thier cars got a lot more respect then the ones who could only drive them. Anything from the 60's (sport coupes like the camaro or mustang) would be a good place to start since you can go for performance and handling without too much major work. Then ask your Dad to put the cash he would save by not buying the Boxster aside for your future...just in case you might need it for that degree in Auto. engineering.
