A really bad night

Last Saturday night I let my granddaughter borrow my Vette to take to a truck show at the local mall. It was not a show but a bunch of idiots doing donuts, burn outs and other things of a stupid nature.
I don't know the whole story, probably never will, but she totaled my Vette running under the front of a Dodge Ram with so much force she bent the steering wheel backwards.
Since it's private property we had a devil of a time getting the cops to come out and when the arrived all they did was run off the juvenile delinquents.
The car is rebuildable though it becomes my grandson Ian's problem as I gave the car to him, He is going to get the car when I pass so this is just a little early.Attachment 75646Attachment 75647Attachment 75648Attachment 75649

Sorry about the 'vette., Ken as I know it meant a lot to you. Is this the same granddaughter that took her "new" car to see her friends, and it ended up getting wrecked by one of her girlfriends a while back - http://www.clubhotrod.com/hot-rod-lo...new-car-2.html

Same granddaughter, she's wrecked, or had wrecked, 3 of her cars and now my Vette, the kid makes VERY POOR decisions.

So sorry to hear this and see the pictures of the Corvette - you had a lot invested in that car in terms of time and tinkering. Glad your grandaughter is okay - this will end up being an expensive lesson. I'm sure she feels just sick about this and a lot of tears have no doubt been shead. It's sometimes hard to remember that, "...the only thing that is the end of the world is - the end of the world." This isn't it but she probably feels like it is darn close. Along with admonishment she needs your reassurance of your love and also a plan to pay her brother for the car.

Wow! I am very sorry to hear this and see the pics. I'm glad your granddaughter is OK. I'm sure your grandson will need help and advice to fix it. No one better for that than you.

Crap, that really sucks, hopefully it will get rebuilt soon.

Sorry to see the Vette like that. Perhaps she needs to be intimately involved in the repair to see the repercussions of her actions.

That sounds like a bloody good idea to me.
We've all done stupid things at times; I know I have.
I borrowed my father's car one evening and drove straight through a T intersection into a ditch t'other side.
And I paid...I had to work for him whenever I had the time for quite some time.
That was a salutary lesson to me....whatever I break through stupidity - I pay for it.

I'm very sorry to see this Ken! I'm very glad your granddaughter is alright and no one else was injured. Here's your oppurtunity to build a modified corvette and not feel guilty. Put a 68-72 front clip on it with a 73 up hood. Use a 80-82 fiberglass bumper cover and modify it to accept 68-73 bumpers.

I agree it would be great to have your granddaughter help/watch fix this car. Maybe it will help her realize her actions have deeper impacts than just tossing a vehicle and getting another?

That is really a sad tale. Life can teach some hard lessons and this one is harder than many.

I'd be fishing around the web for video, to see who was at fault. 3 cars for one grandchild, sorry, she would not be getting the keys to anything I own after number 2. She most certainly needs to be involved in the repairs, hard, dirty, back breaking, a real learning tool. Otherwise, she will continue to not care about the consequences if there aren't any.

With that said, I am glad that everyone is OK, that may not have ended well for you, or her if someone decided they were hurt and needed to seek medical/legal guidance. Just saying.

As far as I know the truck was parked and I agree she should take part in the repairs, but my grandson doesn't want her within 500 feet of the car and I don't blame him.
With my birthday right around the corner things could get very awkward and I don't want this to be the main topic of conversation and my 3 daughters will be well aware of my wishes.

Sorry to be harsh, but I've seen this type of juvenile transgressions in the past, but now, sooner, than latter, you need to make "her" pay for the cost of repair parts, if it means going out and getting a part time job (if she has one, take 75% of her take home pay until the parts are paid for), or shoveling manure (again, it needs to be a painful lesson) is strictly up to you, but it needs to be a painful lesson either way, as she has not learned from the two prior accidents. You, or other keep allowing her to get away with this type of behavior, not making her pay for her previous transgressions as shown, will backfire later on down the road, this third accident already shows this to be true.

PS: I speak from personal experience with our child before he was out of school/college. Don't make the same mistakes we did.

I know nothing of your family dynamics or of others on here. But I know of my own experiences. Sometimes making someone pay for their wrong as a lesson learned only goes so far. This particularly comes true in the teenage years when if they don't have respect , there is only so much you can force them to do without their cooperation. It many times turns into empty threats that you know you cannot enforce ( and they know that too) I am speaking of my own experiences not judging anybody else's family on here. Thankfully, things can get better, and they have for us.

In the third picture the girl with the blue shirt is my granddaughter, the one who was driving my Vette. Last night around 3:30 she and her boyfriend were involved in an accident. she was thrown from the car and hit by another vehicle which, I'm very sorry to say, killed her.
A hell of a way to end a thread.

Very sorry to hear this. I can't imagine that loss having grandkids myself.

I'm sorry for your loss, Ken, and for the loss to your family.

So sad to hear this news. You and your family will be in our prayers.

Update:
The news here in Springfield says that after my granddaughter was ejected from the car she was hit by a hit and run driver. I hope I never encounter said individual as they will be planting him or her as well.

Update:
The vehicle is an 09 Ford Escape Limited which has airbags all over the place, but guess which one didn't deploy. If you answered the passenger side dash you are right. Now she wasn't wearing her seat belt and neither was the driver but the airbags on the driver's side deployed which kept him in the vehicle. My granddaughter went through the windshield and was probably dead before she hit the pavement.
We believe the driver will be released from the hospital in a day or two which is a good thing and no one in the family lays blame on him.
Things could get interesting in the future.

Madison was laid to rest a couple of hours ago in the same cemetery as my late wife and her parents are. It was cold, windy and raining and a short ceremony.
I am surely glad that this week is coming to an end and now, as far as I'm concerned, this thread is done.
I want to thank everyone for their condolences and well wishes.

I would like to add my prayers to everyone else's. For you , your family, and friends our sincerest sympathies.
