    Christmas Presents

Well now that Thanksgivings over I guess the next thing will be to drag the tree in and get ready for the next holiday (hoping to get at least a 2 week reprieve on the tree).

We usually have a few members that turn their talents to making presents and I was wondering what people are building this year. I didn't do much this year my sister is recovering from a hip replacement about a month ago and my younger brother had a hip replaced a couple years ago so I put together a couple of canes.

The upper one with the oak shaft is for my brother and the lower one has a Tulip Poplar (Yellow Poplar) shaft. Mom had a Tulip Poplar in the front yard that was her favorite tree so it will probably bring back memories for my sister.

My daughter has the horses and with that comes moving hay. We'd been using my dad's old hay hooks (they are at least 75 years old and I've thrown thousands and thousands of bales with those things). I decided that Missy should have her own set of hooks to I patterned a new set off of them. I wasn't able to find square stock the size I needed locally so I used round instead but they came out ok. Once she gets them her job will be to wear all the paint off them )

    So what's everybody else making?

Great work on the canes, Mike, and I really like the Hay Hooks, too!

I didn't do a lot this year, but did make some table top games for the grandkids. Swing the ring to the hook, and when you make it you move the disk one space toward the other player while they're doing the same, trying to move the same disk off of your end. The one I saw on the internet listed dimensions in metric, making it seem bigger but it was about a foot high so I scaled up a bit. I think the older kids use a shot glass, and when it is pushed off your end you must empty the glass. Only one of mine is college age, and I'll let him discover that variation himself, if his little sister lets him take theirs back to the dorm....

Nothing special, but the walnut and red oak both came from trees downed on my property, milled to lumber and worked to size. Didn't have 6 rings, but did have some #14 galvanized suspended ceiling wire that I fuse welded after wrapping them on a piece of plastic pipe.
Mike P and Dave Severson like this.

Enjoy the little things in life, and you may look back one day and realize that they were really the BIG things.
