We were in at the same time though I never ran across him. His portrayal of the senior drill instructor in Full Metal Jacket was right on the money for that time period. While watching the movie, if I closed my eyes, I could see and hear my senior drill instructor from 1961. RIP, Gunny

Enjoy the little things in life, and you may look back one day and realize that they were really the BIG things.

I had one drill instructor like him when I went through Marines boot camp in 1997.At graduation day,I asked him if he gets reminded being like R Lee Ermey and he said yes.

All three of my Drill Instructors were Korean war vets and they had a vocabulary unlike any I had heard. Clint Eastwood's Gunny Highway in Heartbreak Ridge was fairly close, especially in the opening scenes, but R. Lee Ermey as Gunny Hartman was pretty much spot on.
    RIP Gunny
