Instead of writing off this thread to a post mortem of the trip, you can get some very valuable input from members for points of interest along the planned route, or suggestions for varying the route to pick up valuable points of interest in regions that will be traveled. Ken's suggestions about the historical areas around Dayton are case in point - focal points that we've been totally ignorant of in laying out the macro route.

I would think that asking for input for specific "things not to be missed" around St Louis, then down towards Bowling Green (or Nashville?), around Detroit, across to Niagara Falls, down into PA and those historic areas, Washington DC, and even Cape Cod (Mike?). Bottom line, I'd think that the potential of enhancing your trip is great if we can get guys & gals who live along the way to offer up ideas of things to see & do. Just my $0.02, and you may not want any more input.

Any input of a specific 'must see/must do' nature is exactly what I need.
It's the 'local knowledge' factor that I'm lacking...I don't know what's out there en route.
Arrival and departure dates are set; but the bit in the middle can be pretty flexible...meaning also that we won't know where we'll be on any given date or time.
Although we will be working to an 'overall' view as to route in general.

Which monuments/museums, Jerry? Washington DC is a place I've never visited, so me trying to advise John & Rosie what they should see is hit & miss at best. Understand that this is not a trip focused on Washington & it's attractions with a week to roam around, but rather what are the high points at the top of the list, to be seen in perhaps a day, or two, or??? (only the Shadow knows.... :rolleyes::LOL::(:LOL::( ) As has been said, the specifics between start and finish are being defined in part by suggestions given here.

In the bigger picture, jb asked me for advise on seeing the country from OKC/KC to Cape Cod. However, the regions of the country defined by jb's general route back in post #56 are places that I've never driven/visited, other than perhaps enroute to some destination and not trying to absorb the area. This means that I'm not best suited to give in depth suggestions on points of interest along the way. That's the purpose of this thread, asking for suggestions on those unique, truly interesting local points of interest from folks who live in the regions, or who may have traveled parts of the route in the past. Ken's suggestions in the Dayton area are an excellent example of high value content - enough specifics to pique interest and make plans.

With that I'll step back and let jb absorb details that hopefully will follow. ;)

Washington DC area---------some monuments you can see/photog as you drive the belt way--Washington Mon(Tall), Pentagon, can't get very close to White House now, IwoJima, some other world war stuff, Simsonian Museum, George Washington"s Mt. Vernon is lame, There's more down towards Richmond , Norfolk area than DC.


Area across eastern Pa , Va, enroute toward DC has lots of Civil War areas--"Four score and seven years ago" at Gettysburg was probably best speech anyone here remembers from school?


I think John mentioned that he liked machinery? John Deere , Caterpillar and Farmall/International in Illinois, Allis Chalmer in Wisconsin, Stubaker Indiana


St Louis----probably already seen the arch? how about Budwieser? I did miss the arch that night, however almost hit the cables hanging down, stupid of them to hang cables to keep anyone from flying thru it!!!!!!!


Nashville ( Grang Ole Opry), Bowling Green-Corvette factory and Musem, Wiskey distillerires, Indy-500 raceway and museum(one of the best I've seen and only a few dollars-no parking fees)


Dayton-AF museum-folks have said it takes all day but you woud really need to be deeply entrenched in aviation to spend that much time-airplanes are big , about 3 or 4 hours and move on( buy a book or two there), up to Detroit area---on the way thru OHIO are lots of car era stuff-all the tire/rubber companies,etc-----


from Detroit------thru Canada to Niagara Falls is shortest route, however back down and around lake Erie and thru Cleveland, Buffalo isn't too bad ( our flights to Buffalo were always full of Japanese with there cameras to the FALLS)


Lots of WINE country areas thru NY and PA, some Allpalacian? Mountains on way towards coast

From my memory of previous suggestions.. In Conneticut, Gillettes Castle near Essex (rte 9) also Essex itself - Then Mystic Seaport and if interested, Groton for the submarines. In RHode Island - Newport is always a popular spot. In New Bedford, MA is the Whaling Museum, always nice and there is a small wonderful local veterans museum in the south end of New Bedford.

Then of course is Cape Cod and all the tourist "to-do's", don't miss Heritage Plantation!
You can ferry over to Martha's Vineyard and or Nantucket.. Then hit Plymouth and see the pebble on your way to Boston..

Of course with you right in my backyard.. we must visit!! I'll be / I am moving and will be juggling topics on a daily basis, but I'll set it all aside and would love to share a day with you!
