Last summer I had several walnut trees around the place that needed to come down for a variety of reasons, and I happened upon a fellow not far away that has a portable band saw mill - SCORE!! I got my logs assembled up near the barn, built a drying rack under the lean-to shed roof, and stacked several hundred board feet of 5/4 planks, stickered to dry. Here's the mill, cutting one of the logs.

A couple of months back my wife shared that she really, really would like for me to abandon the kitchen island work surface and move my laptop somewhere else, along with the accumulation of notes, bills, spreadsheets, etc, etc that tend to accumulate. So, I set about to look for a desk, but everything I found just didn't "fit" with what I wanted. Engage brain, several hundred board feet of nice walnut dried for 6 months or more, all the necessary tools...... MAKE IT!

Here's the result - the legs are each one 1" square tube with three 3/4" tubes spaced evenly on a 1/8" pad that's 3.5" square. A 1" tube rectangle on top, with 3/4" accent pieces across. It's nothing special, but it functions, and the "look" is what I wanted!

Raw edge front & back, as well as on the bottom of the drawer front. Finish is a mix of boiled linseed oil, spar varnish and mineral spirits, something like six or seven coats with hours of drying time between. Mama's happy, I like the result, seems like a win-win! Sometimes even the blind squirrel finds a nut!
