What is this tool used for?

I was given a bunch of machinist tools today which I was very grateful for. I have everything figured out with the exception of this one specialty tool. The only clues I got is the guy that had these tools was heavy in to gun building and VW's. My guess is this is used for one of those two things. It stands about 8.5" tall over all. The aluminum body stands about 7.5" tall. The body is made in two pieces. The base is round stepping down in size from 3.5" diameter to a 2" diameter section with a window in it. This section appears to be cast then turned on a lathe. The edge surface on the window is very grainy and not machined. The upper cam shaped top is 2 3/4" tall with a 1/4" cap attached to the top with 3 Allen head counter sunk machine screws. The large knurled knob on top turns a shaft about 1/2" dia. When the button is depressed on the top and the knob turned the shaft in the center moves up and down. the shaft is hollow and through the 1/2" shaft is a small metering type rod sticking down through the shaft. The rod is not centered in the shaft as it turns. There is an 1 1/2 brass bushing pressed in the open end of the aluminum body. I'm guessing maybe some type of depth gauge as the thumb screw knob is very fine threads. Any idea? Boy am I going to be embarrassed if this is some everyday thing I should know? LOL

This thing is on Ebay if anyone is in need of a hard to find boring head adjuster mechanism for a Truline boring bar for a Volkswagen. Quite an experience learning about this thing on a few of the VW forums. I sure would like to see some one get that could really use it?
