Thread: Need advice: no steering linkage/oil pan clearance

I have a 72 nova with stock front end. Dropped in a new sbc with a deep sump Stefs pan and have no clearance. Took out stock linkag and wanting to go with rack and pinion but not sure what to get. It looks like 4" clearance between cross member and pan. Anybody ever dealt with this???

Got to ask what is your experience level with steering geometry and linkages??? If you haven't done a lot of chassis and suspension build and setup, there are a couple different companies that make "bolt in" style rack and pinions for some of the more popular cars. Do a search on google and see what's offered, then buy a kit as complex or easy to install as your skill level is going to be comfortable with.....

I don't have extensive experience but I do have someone helping with much more experience than me. I'm hoping to find someone that has encountered the same problem and maybe some insight on the best direction. I did search the web and their are several options. Just looking for the best option.

The Nova/Chev2 chassis are famous for complications with oil pans and steering or clutch linkages-----------you will probably need to change oil pan

Not planning to take that route. It was considered but don't want to change from external oil pump. I know that is an option but looking for another alternative in the steering

Was looking on Speed Direct's site and saw the "Steeroids" set up. Wondering if something like that would work

same sub as a 72 camaro and have put many bbc in them with big pan s .sound like the wrong pan for car . you can flip the streering arms and use a rack and make it front steer i would think. spindles are the same as A body Gm. they used them as front steer Gm just made a steering arm for the spindle
