Why I'm Concerned With Exposed Headers

This is a very graphic example of why I'm concerned with exposed pipes on any car. Austin, one of my twin grandson's, took a keen interest in Grandpa's ride leaving a "morning after wedding" brunch for his uncle and new aunt Sunday a week ago. His Mama knew well that the car had been sitting in the shade for three hours, so there was no concern and she let him enjoy the moment. Just sayin' that those shiny pipes are like magnets, especially to toddlers.

Back when side pipes were popular I ran them on a couple of cars (yeah I'm that old :LOL: ). Both the (X) wife and mother in law got bit my them getting out of the car.

awareness of the potential problem sure won't hurt us Grandparents and Parents for sure - - - - don't know about the rest of you but I've gotten into them accidentally over the years - - - - not proud of my stupidity just being honest

Tech, I'd agree in a normal situation, but as I stated in the lead in his Mama (my daughter) knew well that I had arrived to help prepare the food three to four hours before, so she knew that there was no danger from Grandpa's car. You're right though, if a kiddo gets burned it's quite likely indicative of a parenting problem, but that kind of parent is usually the kind that screams loudest about it being someone else's fault, or worse goes running to a sleazy attorney....

I was tought by my dad and I tought my children not to touch anyone's car, motorcycle or what-ever at any time for any reason-ever, not even mine. If you teach them that right off then you should not have an issue of your child getting burned, cut, ECT.

I guess Roger, as long as your grandchildren know not to touch unless mom, dad or grand parents say it is ok, then that works for you and yours.

First thing i tought my kids not to touch cars. See lots of yougins climing on cars these days. Cant believe parents allow that. As a single parent with custody my kids started in helping while still in diapers.
Also I usally had wood burners in my home and or garage. Try as you might telling them it was hot and them already knowing what hot was they would touch it once then never again. Lucky no one was seriously burned. Even my cats and dogs back off if I say something is hot or some spilled oil or coolat they know when I say ucckky they back off.

The only real issue was when I got the anti sieze out somehow the kids would get into it.

I think of the burns on my calf from riding Honda 50s and 90s. Riding double or tripple on one.

You guys must be waaay better teachers than I if you had thirteen month old toddlers who had already learned not to touch a car, especially the shiny parts. I didn't say that I condoned the action, and I was not there when Austin was checking out the car. My daughter sent me a few pictures telling me that it was only a matter of time before he would be wanting to borrow it, which I thought was a hoot!

I was at a run over on Waiheke Island a few years back when a kid of about ten climbed up omto the back of the '47 and walked across the rear splash pan.
Its mother got a bit uppity with me when I bellowed at the kid; so I bellowed at her too. (Just to keep things equal and fair...if she can't train her kid to behave correctly she deserves a bellow too.)

"I'd never climb on your furniture; don't let your your idiot child walk on my car!"

The husband/father didn't want any of this; he went as fast as his legs would carry him to somewhere/anywhere else.

I somehow got the impression that neither of them (mother and daughter,) liked me very much.
Dunno what the cause of that could be.

But I doubt that kid will ever touch another car; let alone climb on it.

many adults arnt much better. One guy wanted to look under the hood pulled the release then he tried to open the hood from one corner with out releasing the safty catch. Another closed it his ring left a chip. another leaned against it had to stop him from tapping his beer can on the side.
I mich seems like if someone sees a nice car they have to open thier door into it.

Good on ya johnboy. Someone has to teach the little ankle biters how to behave, the parents don't seem to know to do it. Perhaps they weren't taught by their parents either. Television and the computer don't teach manners and the respect for the property of others and that may be the only instruction these generations are receiving. If the parents aren't doing it, then we are doomed to suffer succeeding generations of illiterate and unmannerly troglodytes.

My children would not have climbed on your property in the first place and if they did, they could expect to have their little bottoms warmed up on the spot with my belt. As I said though, I'm probably at the end of a line of parents who could and would do that.

Mike, I don't know why your observation about the fingernail shocked me. It shouldn't have, but it did.

Personally, I'm fed up to the teeth with the whole lot of it and can only hope that our Maker will eliminate the human race (Doofus Erectus) and start anew on this rock with another species that will have enough common sense not to foul their nest.

2 ........... 13 months old . lord keeping them both in the same zip code would be enough . my nieces were 11 months apart. always in two different directions.

we have 14,, 21 to 6 weeks all ove the map I know not a one of them would touch things they were told not to...There parents won't warm there rears in front of anyone but my daughter in law has taken her girl in to the lady's room and when they came out te little one had a totaly different attitude.

There are those times in every kids life, when even knowing right from wrong, something happens and you just gotta touch! You just GOT TO!! You NEED to feel it on your fingers, Don't know why.. You just HAVE TO!

Dad would do more than warm my rear-end! Mom made sure I had my head straight! But that didn't always matter! And after I got burned (in this instance) my Dad would "pat" my bottom and then explain why he didn't want me to touch. But it was to late I HAD TO TOUCH!

But, in this example at least, RSpears was probably feelin' awful that some silly kid got burnt. And this whole topic is really a microcosm of what I call the stupid (choose 1) American/Human syndrome.. You know the one. The whole stickin' your foot under a runnin' lawn-mower, or, stickin' your hand down a clogged snowblower or any number of foolish things we (choose 1) Americans / Humans do that then requires some engineering devices that stops a (choose1) American / Human from hurting themselves or others with their (choose 1) ignorance/foolishness/carelessness.

Here in Mass., those headers are not allowed! Yet guys have'em / run'em and I guess if someone gets hurt around them / because of them , that owner accepts the liability and when he loses his car(s) / house(s) all because he wanted "the look"... then I guess he better be a big boy when he signs the paper / titles over and pays for the lawyer(s)!

Ranting over... putting the box away for one of you next! 8-)

the ONLY thing good about our new home location is that we are closer to the "youngins" (all ages) and none of them are further than an hour away now - - - - - I plan on taking full advantage of that too

I personally have never met or talked with anyone that's been sued over side pipes. The public just might be smarter on this one then we think. Most burns that are talked about happen to the owners, mentioned right here in some of the post. I guess Geico needs to offer side pipe insurance to protect the drivers.

My take on the whole matter if you like em, drive em, enjoy em, if one feels guilty or paranoid about having them. Remove them put your mind at ease, but telling me all the terrible possibilities of having them on my hotrod, please excuse me I am not listening.

Background, I got my bottom smacked when need be and kicked, (I missed every other step) on one occasion, and, I deserved it!
Several years ago after I had just got my hot rod on the road. I was attending a hot rod show. One of my buddies wanted hear the car, so, I fired her up. Now, my car has full fenders but no hood, and has full length headers not a lakes style pipes as were pictured in post 1. Well, my oldest son at the ripe old age of, I think 3, decided those headers needed to be touched. Yes, he burned 3 of his 5 fingers on one of his hands and my name was mud. Momma wasn't happy, my day was cut pretty short. When I got home, he was in bed out cold. Cried himself to sleep. Never bothered him after his nap, hard to believe. I guess you could say it was a parental issue, but, both of us parents missed it. I have raised my kids since day one to not touch it if it's not yours. My oldest is 9 now and he is starting to get it.
I also remember as a young boy at car shoes with my parents. These ignorant unknowing parents would let/help their children up onto a fender or running board for a look see or picture. To these people, they only see cars as utilitarian machines. What's the big deal, they would ask. Truely clueless!
It's funny today, how tolerant us parents have to be. You have all these damn professionals on T.V. telling us how damaged we are from our parents getting physical with us. Poppycock!!! If I would of said 1/10 of what my kids say to me to my dad, he would of probably killed me. Kids today have it to good. At least mine do. Parental issue, somewhat. Social issue, absolutely! Don't even think about laying a hand on your children today.
One last parting shot. When I was in high school, the math teacher cracked every single person in the class for dropping their pencils on the floor at 9am. I highly doubt that could happen today.

Some of us have to have a HUGE sense of humor to live in this state! Like you most of the folks I know that have gotten burnt have been the owners. And like I said, if you like'em, then use'em. You'll just have to man up if something bad happens! Nuff Said!

You know, I wish I had not posted the picture, or started the thread at all. I simply thought the picture, which was impromptu and not staged, brought to light the temptation for kids to touch, the danger of a kiddo getting burned, which no one wants, and #1 the need to be aware of the situation, and to be watchful any time we pull into an area with kids around at least until things get cool. No one got burned - Austin's smiling with his hand where it shouldn't be. Keith, I appreciate your story and it is obvious that you "get it" - parenting is a full time job and it takes years before the kids "get it", including understanding the "why". Like Mike said, "Rant over". You'll not hear from me again on this.

Roger, even though the pic concerns you, it is a great picture, and it also opens up a new generation to our love of these old hot rods. We just gotta watch them little'ns with eagle eyes after the key is turned off.
This post got me thinking to about the overall safety of our machines. Most are built safe but, 1930's crash protection...oh yeah, there wasn't any. I always worry about that when we are traveling to/from the rod runs and, the kids want to take turns riding with me. People are idiots when they pull up along side these old cars at 55-70mph and take a long look see.

when i can afford headers i will get them.
and you can be damn sure my 3 year old grandson will be watched as well as warned.
and yes,
he knows what dont touch HOT means.

Probably aren't going to be able to teach them that young. Just try to keep them away for another year, until they are old enough to understand what you are saying.

Hell, I'm 71 years "young" and I still touch paint to see if it's wet.
