Didja see where Kenseth is leavin' Rousch? Maybe they'll give Carl some of the "A" game goodies now?
I'll try watchin', but Daytona usually puts me to sleep! LOL..
Yeah, Cousin Carl sure hasn't had his usual year, running out of fuel (twice) and 3 blown engines just isn't his usual season. Him and Gordon are both way in the negative on luck this year, however if all that bad luck (and poor planning) switches to good luck, then look out! Both of them will climb to the top quickly!!!!!!!
WOW---the start of another crazy night at Dayton!!!! AJ Almindinger failed a drug test and Penske has Sam Hornish on a plan from North Carolina to Daytona to drive the car tonight!!!!!!
Got to give him the benefit of the doubt, I suppose... NASCAR'S drug test shows up everything, could be he was taking some sort of prescription drug and failed to register it with NASCAR. But if it is an illegal substance, no doubt in my mind that Capt. Penske will send him packing!!!!!
maybe he ate a bunch off poppy seed buns at that hotdog eating contest at Coney Island on the Fourth
Think I'm getting old....when they did driver intro's, about 80% of the drivers look like high school age kids to me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:LOL::LOL:
You know you're old when...:LOL::LOL:
I don't know about you but.. This can't be a race! At least when there were 2 car pairings there would be some passes being made!
Just cruisin'. With the heating issues and the hot weather at Daytona tonight, doubt there'll be much going on till at least half way through the race.... Unless the outside lane gets so it can pull up on the leaders.... Anyway, Sam Hornish made it in time to take over the driving in the 22 car.
Wonder if there's ever been a July Daytona race without a yellow???
That was ugly!!! Kurt Busch got impatient, moved to the center lane and ran into a couple cars... At least he hit the wall and bent an upper A-Arm so Mr. Mouth won't be in Victory Lane again tonight!!!! Biffle and Kenseth are just staying out front!!! Those Fords have some big power tonight!
And maybe the Biff pays a penalty??? Pitting when red?
Don't know.... I don't think he should, heck they were dang near at the entrance, didn't see where else they could have gone??? But, NASCAR usually sees it a bit different then I do!!!!
There was that one stretch where Jr. and Smoke were workin' together, Smoke pushin', looked like they were practicing a strong push/draft move to mayber use later if they can hook up again.
And they did again.. I think the Biffs crew screwed the pooch on that one! They shoulda just had him drive through!
Man the 16 & 17 are tough!
Sure didn't take long for them to get back up towards the front!!!! Wonder if they can make it back to the lead, or is there another wreck coming yet????
Finally some excitement!
Another good test of the safety equipment!!!!
Ambrose did a heck of a job trying to knock down the outside wall!!!!! Should be a wild finish, as usual at Daytona!!!!
The Rousch cars get back to the front and there goes "The BIG ONE".... oh well...
Oh well... maybe next time.. sigh.
and Smoke picks up his 3rd win of the year, what a crazy, wild, typical Daytona finish!!!!!!:LOL::LOL:
Wild and crazy for sure, they sure trimmed the field down a bit two laps before the checker. Smoke and the late Earnhardt have the most wins @ that track. Was it Nascar that created that pit lane mess? The pits are open .... nope, just kidding they are closed.......
I must say I was pleasantly surprised to see they must have made some kind of change on the push car thing. Dave did you happen catch what that might be and is it for all the tracks, have we seen the last of that?
NASCAR had nothing to do with creating any mess! The cars behind the guys pitting didn't notice the leaders pitting! They literally drove over them! The leaders were already committed to the pits and the Biffs crew figured they would take advantage of the situation but it cost him big time! I wondered where all the spotters had gone off to?
The changes were not for all tracks but for the superspeedways only. And in my opinion, was a mistake. NASCAR closed up the radiator opening so the cars would overheat forcing the breakup of 2 car pairings pushing their way to the front. Now we're back to follow the leader and wait for the last 10 laps then let it all hang out and then tear up equipment!
Instead of dragging this out for 500 miles, Daytona & Talladega should become 50 lap events! At least it would cut out all the boring ride around for hours...
On the aero package, they raised the sides a bit creating more air under the back of the car and somewhat limiting the side draft effect. Limiting the coolant system pressure to 32 pounds on the Superspeedways limited how long a push car can stay in line without overheating. Fans wanted pack racing back, guess from last nights race and the big crashes they got it! Still wonder why Biffle and Kenseth could pull up so fast in the outside lane and no other cars could, maybe the Ford's just have a few more horses I suppose??
Got a kick out of the post race interviews on Victory Lane! Smoke, Kahne, Burton and a few others seemed genuinely surprised that they ended up finishing as far up as they did! The last lap crash sure did switch things up! Gordon did ok, not so with Johnson though! Nothing is set in stone for the chase yet, for sure!!!!
Fords engine package from 2 years ago was all about cooling! They concentrated on allowing the engine to run hot and survive.
Of course it depended on raising the pressure which NASCAR took away!
They also changed the rear spoiler a bit to remove some of the draft advantage.
NASCAR's always looking at technology "advantages", and then changing the rules to take them away, sometimes temporarily to give others time to incorporate similar changes to keep the field close. Often it seems there is no justification for the rules, other than it being like Momma used to say, "Because I said so, that's why!!"
So true! So true.. It must create a lot of bald engineers who agonize over all these details to gain a sliver of an advantage... just to have the sanctioning body take it away!
My sentimental favorite last night was Trevor Baine.. I was hoping he could repeat a win there.. He got caught in a couple wrecks.. :( oh well! :3dSMILE:
With the time it takes to run 500 miles, they could knock it down to a 50 lap event use the rest of the time to run some other classes. Maybe trucks, super modifies similar to the way drag races are done. That would get rid of the boredom, and yes the last 10 laps are the race. Could cut the bottom line expense single set of tires in a prefect world, increase the fuel load so no fuel stop.
Run 3 20 lap qualifyers and 1 50 lap feature with 1/2 the cars
Why?? :HMMM: Young man makes a mistake, folds under the pressure.. I hope it proves otherwise but, I hope he's given a second chance!
Or, they could go back to last years setup and do 500 laps of lead changes and excitement! But "the FANS" (???) didn't like that!?!?! **)
NASCAR was never designed to be a replacement for the local Saturday night show of heats, dashes, and features. It features the best of the best in equipment and drivers. 400 to 500 miles of straightaway speeds of 200+ mph on the straightaway is anything but boring as there are 42 cars to contend with as you are moving around the track with aero issues moving and buffeting the car, dodging drivers who make a mistake, the strategy of pit stops, the knowledge and experience of adjusting the car to the changing track conditions, and a myriad of other things!!!! Then there's the old adage of "To finish first you must first finish". IMO those who consider long distance racing as boring just aren't into all the little things it takes to go fast for that long of a time. Save the car, keep the fenders on it, save the tires, know what the car is doing wrong and being able to communicate it to your crew chief. It's far more then follow the leader, if it were that simple anyone could do it. How about what the driver has to go through to be in condition to run that many laps and maintain the intensity of concentration that it requires???
To many, I suppose "excitement" would be defined as lots of wrecks, while to me a 500 mile race with no cautions is the best race to watch! NASCAR does run the shortrack format once a year, no points just a kewl million to win it!!!!
I doubt NASCAR would ever even consider a weekly show of heats and features, it's not what NASCAR was ever intended to be. That type of racing is available at short tracks throughout the country. Even with the economy in the toilet, NASCAR racing is still one of the most well attended sporting events in the country! Wanting NASCAR to abandon their long races would be like expecting the 24 Hours of LeMans to become a 100 lap race! Just not how it's designed to be!
I have never been to a NASCAR race, but I have read alot about them. The events during the week before the race capped off the a long race is the main feature.I think Dave is right on the money about the things that make a long race interesting.
I have said it before.
The racing that I really like is 43 cars going 180+MPH average door to door 6" from each other for 500 miles (most times it is 3+ hours) and then the winner wins by inches or 10THS of a second. Like seeing races like that, and if there are no cautions, that is like iceing on the cake.
