What's old is what's new, Datsun is back?

Nissan may be reviving its former nameplate, Datsun, in 2014, if a report by the Japanese news agency Nikkei is to be believed.

The report, which did not cite sources, said that Nissan wants to create a lower-cost sub-brand to better compete in countries such as Russia, India and Indonesia. The cars would cost roughly twice that of the Indian-built Tata Nano, the world's cheapest production car, or about $6,100 at today's exchange rates.

There are even plans, according to Nikkei, of a 0.8-liter engine destined for Russia. Warranties would be shorter than on regular Nissan cars, according to the report.

When reached today, Nissan had no comment on the rumors.

Datsun was Nissan's original name prior to the mid-1980s, as anyone older than 25 knows well. (the 240Z is the brand's most legendary offering.) During the name switch, many Nissan models carried both Nissan and Datsun badges on the back decklids.

I drove a few but never had occasion to own one, I wonder if they'll get back into the U.S.?

I have owned a few Nissans, and I think they are a good car..Have done thousands of miles in them...I think the pick of the litter was an Aussie assembled Skyline sw..3.0litre six,injected,,auto/overdrive,and very economical..For an everyday driver,,it did its job well..

I had a Datsun, think it was a 210 or something like that.... Bought it a police impound auction for $200.00 and drove it for 6 or 7 years!!! Poor little thing would go through anything, snow, mud, gravel roads, chasing cow in the pasture, it didn't care!!!! It got better then 30 mpg, at the time I was still living on the farm and usually had a winter job in town so the mileage was important. In all the time I had it I changed oil in it 4 or 5 times and replaced one radiator hose, other then that it was a no upkeep car! Finally, while I was at work one night with the car parked on the street, some drunk ran into it and totalled the car, think I collected like $500.00 on insurance!!!! Heck yeah, I'd probably get another one if it was a similar deal!

    .8 liter! That's like 50 cu.in.! It certainly won't be a worry to the 240Z drivers! ROFL.......

Datsuns are cool. My brother in law has a late 60's pickup that has won a sew awards at some shows down south.
