Sorry guys, but I am having trouble working this out--maybe tommorrow----I have USA, Great Britain, Aussie and New Zealand pics of some super cars for land speed record attempts which mean SUPERSONIC---

Jerry - good subject and a different one
I've seen a couple of write ups on that try for the 1000 mph mark. My personal opinion is that the driver(s) and I believe one is a woman, is that they are playing Russian Roulette with a revolver and 5 of the 6 chambers have rounds in them.

That Invader 5R looks like an update of the Blue Flame tha Gabelich drove. both in overall shape and concept. It'll be a big jump from 622 to 1k.Your Uncle Bob, Senior Geezer Curmudgeon

Yep guys, that is the subject--I just have an artical in Racecar Engineering and I was trying to post the pics and articals but was having one of those days that my computer didn't want to co op--
Also a little further down the road I was going to post some stuff about the pressure waves at trans sonic speeds and some fluid dynamics stuff--I'll keep trying--
Bob--its not such a big jump as it is a sharp incline at the transonic speeds for control and then it levels off---after (well even before) the trans sonic area of the speed curve, the issue of wheels is big and I don't mean diameter---also they are fast running out of stopping room--almost need to be able to pull up and go around like in a plane--Last edited by jerry clayton; 02-23-2012 at 06:04 AM.

Looking at the NA Eagle it's a plane w/o wings! Confirmed in the description it's a converted F-104 fighter, which seems like a good way to go apart from the fact that it's so short I'm not sure of the stability. Says GB holds the record since '97 at 763mph, Mach 1.2 Like Jerry says, it'd better get there quick, because the coast down distance is not going to be short.Roger

You see here a comment about the main frame's wt and how they want to slow the acceleration because the four wheels would have a tendency to spin at different speeds.

Aero is everything in this as it no longer a HP thingie--The wheels also have huge forces to overcome with the mass/diameter/rotational speed---plus any single point on the wheel goes downtrack in a direction that is up, around, down, back up and around PLUS each spot stops forward movement at the bottom ground contact point and doubles the velocity at the over the top points--next time you watch the top fuelers on NHRA look at the shape of the rear tires at speed/acceleration--there's about 3 areas that they distort outwards and then have to come back down to earth and not slip
Also a biggie with the wheels is having a disign that they can put a braking mechanism on--the American Eagle can generate 1550 braking hp off each rear wheel.
Gary--The Aussies on the 5R car are limiting the accel to 3.2 Gs so that wheel rotation can keep up and roll instead of sliding/skidding--the car is rocket poweredLast edited by jerry clayton; 02-23-2012 at 07:36 AM.

I'd never really thought about it, but there's got to be considerable gyroscopic effect of the rotating mass of the wheel/tire assemblies, especially at those rotational speeds. I'm not sure how that affects steering and stability, but the force analysis has got to be a bear to understand.Roger

If anyone is near Barnes/Noble---they carry this maz( I think, we succribe) Jan 2012 issue, if they don't have it, maybe you can get a back issue--its especially full of stuff this issue

Seems to me that we're nearing the gray areas of the term "land" speed record. what percentage of the time do the wheels actually contact the "land" in a jet powered vehicle at 700+ MPH? My definition of land speed record vehicle is that it be propelled by the rotation of the wheels…… but that's just me.

Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
