Living down there is like playing Russian roulette with 5 rounds in a 6 shooter.
you can not purchase property in a flood zone without buying flood insurance unless you pay cash period. you choose to live there you take the risk but it is tax payers who pay to rebuild it all. so how is that fair ? you build a house in hurricane alley but i have to pay to rebuild it every year. rich and poor alike. stop blaming society for the poor . that mentality is what got us into the mess in the first place . we do it here and all over the planet. i for one am tired of it . you either fish or cut bait but the free ride needs to come to an end . move home with your mama or someone else but stop making me pay for you .
Early in 1975 my employer transferred me to New Orleans. We lived there a little over four years.

There were fourth generation welfare recipients then. No telling how many more generations there are now. People talked about the fact that the pumps and conduits for removing flood water from the area were 100 years old and couldn't possibly handle a disaster like maybe a levee failure that would dump Lake Pontchartrain into the city. Political corruption was rampant. Except for private schools the schools were rotten.
I could go on.....
People complained but didn't do anything. State and local government did damn little (if anything) in the way of preventive measures to avoid the disaster that had to come, and come it did. Hurricanes came and the dikes failed and the pumps were useless. You know the rest of that part of that story.
I mentioned political corruption.... For what it's worth, Smooth Eddie went to the slammer a long time ago. As far as I know, he's still there.
Gary, take an interesting drive on highway 190 between Baton Rouge and New Orleans if you get a chance. You'll see what looks like hundreds of those FEMA trailers. Just sitting.
Louisiana now has a non-Democrat governor who is facing situations and dealing with problems and not sitting around waiting for the federal government to come riding in and do things that state and local entities should have faced up to many years ago.
New Orleans is an intriguing and very interesting city. A great place to visit. Our son is career Coast Guard and is stationed there. It's a long day's drive from where we live but the grand-kids are there so we'll do it.

wasn't his job to take care of new orleans . they have a governor to take care of it . not to mention state / county representatives. so you really think the president is suppose to take care of it ? what should have happened is there state representatives should have been brought up on charges for not doing their job. starting with their worthless governor .
Shine,Ive said it before that politics on a site like this really doesn't have a place. And I don't like posting about it either. I have said a number of times that Trillion dollar debt from two wars is the main issue at hand and you seem to reject that fact. I don't think there is anything more I can do. So for now anyways,I'm going to lay off posting to this thread. Thanks for the discussion.

Well, Obama was elected into office to fix those issues. Instead, he's dumped billions into other things he was told would fail. Solyndra, Think City and the Stimulus to name a few, but these things kept people thinking he was doing something good at the time he did them. Now, if he applied those billions back into paying off the deficit, then we would be better off now than before. Rather than do that, he decided to raise the debt cap and keep on spending.. Obama understands people want handouts, free healthcare and a job that they have to do as little at to get a good paycheck. What he doesn't understand is that the Government cannot afford to fund these programs. So, we can re-elect a guy that we know will keep the debt climbing, or we can elect a guy that we know can make money and likely reverse the deficit. He may not be the most likeable person, but you don't have to be likable to be successful. Many people hated Clintons guts, but he knew how to balance a budget. Even if Romney only got 4 years, it would be enough to improve the goverments money problem.. 16 Trillion in debt, the goverment is bankrupt, if a company goes bankrupt ( files chapter 11 ), they downsize and restructure.Quote:

Maybe they weren't intended to be permanent residences but they weren't intended to be travel trailers either. They are presentable enough, though.
I'd love to have one parked beside a moderately remote lake where my grandson and I could wet an occasional fish hook!
