Last night I finished installing software on my computer called Dragon naturally speaking. This is voice recognition software and I haven't used my keyboard all day today. It also has a lot of commands for the computer so like my keyboard, the mouse will start to get dusty also.
Anyone here using voice recognition software?
if your running Windows 7 Speech Recognition is included in all versions of Windows 7. I have not experimented with it yet. with all my different southern twangs who knows what it would type lol
Yeah, I can't see a speech recognition package being good for me. Last thing I need it for the computer to be picking up what I might be muttering when I read things :eek: I'd need to clean up my language :LOL:;)Quote:

I had asked her if they ever thought about using a software of this type. Their concern was not getting the correct information entered because of the differances in the way people talk. I have seen this software on tv lately. It seems a bit slow. Is it any faster then it is on the commercials?

In the setup procedure it does ask you what part of the country you're from. As to the speed, mine is very quick but I'm using two solid-state hard drives in my computer. I think in that commercial you get the idea that it's going slow but really what they're doing is they're putting together a complete sentence because that is how the software will determine what word to use when a word has different meanings and different spellings that sounds the same. If you speak in choppy sentences, it will have a hard time determining what word to use when a word has the same sound but different spellings. The English language has so many words that are spelled differently and have different meanings that sound exactly the same so the software program needs to hear the whole sentence to choose which one of the words to use in that sentence.
Every user of the program will have to set up his or her own profile. For my set up, the first CD taught me how to teach my computer how I spoke. This took about one hour. Then you speak to your computer so that it can understand your voice, fluctuations and how you use your vocabulary. After completing this, I went out and had some fun on the forums. The more you use the program the more dialed in it gets to your voice. The first time I used it, it was making a mistake about three or four times every hundred words. This is the second day that I've used it, and so far on this text it's 100%.
Heck, even my old work 2.0 Windows in the early '90s had at least a rudimentary version of voice recognition. The XP on the PC I'm using to type this as well as the V-7 on my new lap top also have this feature. Why would I spend more of my time now that I no longer have work/schedule restraints when I wouldn't use it then. With my slow typing at least I can remove the uh's, profanity as well as the ums. Then I can add my punctuation and whatever exclamatory phrases I use plus reconstruct a clunky thought or sentence structure. Is it a good program - probably for folks like a professional, doing transcriptions or an author who has his thoughts perfectly together. But not me. Have a blast with it if you are comfortable though
I can see that it would only be useful for one person unless you could set up different profiles.
Wonder if it will get confused if there is someone talking in the background. Especially if they are a loud talker.
There can be as many users as you want each user has to set up their own voice profile so that the recognition software can do a proper job. I think if you could witness how easy my speech is flowing on the this page you would become a believer also.
I never learned how to touch type but I'm a pretty fast hunt and pecker. But from my experience on the third day of using this software program and how well it is performing, I doubt I'll ever go back to the keyboard.
More than one user makes it worth looking into.
I use a computer all day long but not for word type documents. I could see where this would be usefull for some.
Probably helps you quite a bit on your own forum.
Now that I think about it, this might be a good package to have. If you run awry of the forum powers about something posted one could say, "Oh, that's not what I meant! This darned computer must have misunderstood what I said!!" :LOL::LOL::p:LOL::LOL:
I have a friend who had a motorcycle accident some years back he is now a quad. He has been using that system for emails and such for years.

All this stuff is absolutely amazing. It was almost 30 years ago when I got a Commodore 32 as a first computer, my thermostat is now smarter than that thing. About 20 years ago my first cell was the historic Motorola "brick"..................a couple months ago got a Droid 4g based phone. It takes way better pics than the first digital we got for the shop about 15 years ago, plus all the things Steve mentioned and more. I did have a glitch with the voice recognition last week after an update was loaded, it wouldn't recognize a simple word like "Mom" (had to call on her birthday) until it heard it half a dozen times. Small problem for such technology though.......
Bob do you remember Trash 80 Radio Shack computers? I think my first windows pc had a 120 mb hard drive which was huge compared to my roomates computers which had something like 40 mb. I also had 2 mb ram which was huge too. Funny that most memory sticks hold at least 4 gbs now, and we just got a backup external hardrive that has 2 TB.
Yeah Steve, I remember a couple small business guys I worked with in the late '70s had TRS 80s for basic book keeping.............geek head pioneers. Ten years ago we had a wonderful program at the shop that kept track of job scheduling, did parts ordering and inventory control, all the basic book keeping and payroll stuff, accounts recievables and payables, insurance billings and updates, and on and on, mostly single entry stuff that cascaded throughout the program if done correctly. I would imagine that now, a decade or so later, they're even more powerful. Single terrabite storage is almost the basic for a home computer, and for business........................holy cow!!
My first home computer (around 20 years ago) had a 10 MB hard drive. The one I have now has two 320 MB hard drives. I also have a 1TB external drive.
Who da thunk it back then.
I think I still have a TI99 in the box unopened in the attic. Probably burned up from the heat. TI was a customer of our company when they decided to get out of the computer business and sold their finished inventory for $50.00ea.. It's amazing what we have seen evolve technology wise!
Things have changed a lot in the last 20 years. In the past I'd always buy a cheap PC with year old specs. About 4 months ago I splurged for the 1st time on my new PC, and I'm so glad I did. Never had this kind of speed before. Running (2) 256 GB solid state drives in a raid 0 configuration for programs, 1.5 TB regular "spinning" hard drive for file storage, and an intel i7 CPU, water cooled and over clocked to 5 Ghz. Life is good.
