thanks ntf and gary. it has been a wild week around here.
Power is finally back on at about 6:30PM (went out on Sunday about 10:00AM) the sun was out all day which gave me a chance to start cleaning my yard - you can only guess what 60-70 mph winds will pull off 20 or so 100+ foot oaks along with 5-6 inches of rain. Two trees, maples, I believe, from the woods did come down and are partially draped in the yard - the Stihl Farm Boss chain saw will make quick work of them in the morning.
It looks like the eye of that storm passed overhead. There was about an hour on Sunday afternoon when it stopped raining, the sky got bright and the wind stopped - then it began again.
There is a lot of flood damage, with a low lying area of town being evacuated according to the town supervisor(mayor) A bunch of non local electric company crews with still over 100,000 still out of power are working locally. Thankfully we weren't hit as bad as downstate or Vermont - and they are in real trouble. Makes me wonder what would happen if it had been a Cat 3 storm as predicted instead of a low level 1 or tropical storm, whatever it ended up being. I still don't know the full extent.
Sure am glad for my new generator - didn't lose a thing in the refrigerator, but couldn't get on the net or even TV
dave i am so glad to hear from you. sounds like you got the kind of damage we did. thank goodness that you guys are okay.
Good to see you back on Dave!!! Been worried and wondering how things were... Saw some footage of the damage, going to be a mess for quite awhile, but thank God the storm didn't intensify before it hit you!!!!! Glad you're back with us and safe!
Glad all of you guys and gals are safe. Hope for a speedy recovery to you all. Barb I know just what you mean about the cops spoiling your fun! :)
Thanks for the good words. We seem to be almost back to normal, but there are still some problems. There is a big dam on the Mohawk River (Erie Canal) which runs through our town and has some potential structural failure. It isn't really high, ~30-40 feet but about a mile wide. Then some really nasty flooding between that dam and 25 miles upstream.
Now, we do have to worry and wonder about Matt in Prattsville. He hasn't been on here as often as the past, but I'll check on him at Hotrodders.com. I know others are in that path, hopefully are fine and that they check in soon
Out shortly to finish my yard clean uphttp://planetsmilies.net/not-tagged-smiley-10031.gif
A video to watch - http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/lookout/...153510538.html
Glad to hear everyone is safe buildings can be put back up trees will grow again If friends are gone thats forever.
Glad you guys are checkin' in and don't have too bad a story to tell.
Saw Ol' Joe Bastardi on the tube last night. He's a wizard at prediction, uses historical models moreso than the computer models (imagine that), says this looks a lot like 1954. He sees another hurricane potential forming with possibility of hitting the east coast again in a week to 10 days. Watch out for trees......
tracking that one too bob. i am afraid that irene was just a really bad warning and the worse is yet to come.
Tropical Storm Katia
Tropical Storm KATIA
At least I have my generator and 3 full cans of gas.
My wife said that for another one like Irene, we'll latch the trailer up to the truck, put the pup and a few changes of clothes a supply of adult beverages (coffee, tea, etc.....)in it and go West and only stop when we reach bright sunshine and whispering zephyrs.:D
Just saw on Fox News that the village of Prattsville, for all practical purposes, no longer exists. Sure hope that Matt is safe.
thanks for the update on prattsville. sure wish that matt would sign in soon.
From the video that was showing on Fox it sure didn't look good, trees being uprooted, major flooding ,and most everything in a mess.
can not get regular news as my flat scrren got zapped during the storm. cost more to fix it then replace it. so now i am saving my pennies to buy another one in a week or so. with my insurance deductable not even worth claiming it.
