Is there anyway to remove light scratches from stainless steel???

My brother and his family came over last night for dinner.
Well my wife had to go to the store for something and while
she was gone my brothers wife thought she would help.
She decided it would be a good idea to scrub the front of
our brand new stainless steel refridgerator with a green
scrub pad.
The wife has not stopped yelling at me yet, and that was
yesterday. You would think, I did it.
Anyway I have buffers and stuff just not sure if I can
put a polishing compound or something like that on it
to get the scratches out.

if it is mirror stainless I would try buffing it. if it is a rough surface you would have to do by hand in the direction of the grain. A picture would help

stain less is a pain in the butt you will have to step sand it to smooth .. till no deep or any marks can be seen at all .it will look cloudy shine with no corse or any marks can be seen after step sanding. when done then buff to shine . i woud think it a brush finsh so you just need to put the brush marks the right way .by using a block with a red 3m pad and working back to a gray 3 pad you need working a grain up like cffisher said. we had to do set of rims for GM concept show truck each spoke had a grain and had to be dead strait this is were a hand made block or sanding block helps

Kurt, it's a shame this would happen on a new 'frig but the sister-in-law was only trying to help. Before attempting to repair the damage your best bet would be to contact the manufacturer to see what's on the S.S. surface, some will have a clearcoat over the S.S. If all else fails trying to refinish the surface, you can always order just a replacement door.

I don't know if this would work, Kurt, but there is a product called Barkeepers Friend, kinda like Comet Cleanser, but made for stainless. Boaters use it a lot on the stainless fittings to remove stains and scratches, so maybe it might help you out.

It is available at Publix here, but I don't know what large grocery stores you have out there.

I still think you need to know what's on the surface before using any type of cleaner, if it's clearcoated the situation will only get worse if you use even a mild abrasive cleaner such as Barkeepers Friend.

It very difficult to repair. We use a lot of grain-sanded stainless and it gets scratched thru the protective overlay when we are fabricating the part. For very mild scratches, I agree with the previous posters that you need to determine if the stainless has a protective clear appied. If not, and the scratches are shallow, the bar keeper's friend is the best we have found.....but it is very difficult to blend the surface....almost impossible I would predict. I suggest contacting a supplier of the appliance and getting thru to the manufacturer's people who must deal with this quite often.....you arent the first to scratch a stainless appliance. IF nothing else, move it to the garage and fill it with beer and buy her another one.

I have tried that Lamin8er, that ain't working.
I really don't blame her for being so pissed.
We just paid about $2300 for it less then 6
months ago and now it's all scratched up.

Hey Don; I found a realy good inexpensive fix for the stainless steel. This is a excellent how to do video using, 3M Scott brite scratch pads.

The 3M scott brite scratch pad is also what messed it up, but it was the green one you use for pot and pans.
It makes it alot easier for a dunce like me, if I can see exactly what I have to do.
I was scared to use anymore 3M Scratch pads on it, with out seeing exactly how to do it.
Now I know exactly what pads to use first and then what pad to use second and got
to see how guys that do it all the time do it. Nothing like seeing it first hand for me.

yep well like i said at one time we prep GM concept rims gm show cars .. they started life out was 400 pound blocks of alum then it was a rim at 24 hours of cnc cutting but choppy . we would hand block sand the rims till dead flat so they could paint them or buff them one year we did the years line up one or two sets had to look brush look rims were i was told 25000 each so they had to be top notch so i know abit about this :)

What did you say a replacement door costs??.Any chance you could go 50/50 on that costs??.It does come down to how much you willing to spend to keep harmony with the wifely??.If you arranged for a new door and she wasn't impressed,then something else is bugging her and yes you do need to build that dog house.

No one out here carries the 3M Scott Brite scratch pads I need.
Not Home Dept. not Ace Hardware not any of the hard ware stores that are here in town.
It looks like I'll have to make the hour trip into Vegas for them.
Thats alright wanted to make a Sam's club trip anyway.
I have not priced a new door yet, Gary.
I am waiting to see how the door turns out first, then if it does not come out
to the wifes satisfaction then I will start pricing them.

them pads come in red and gray by other as well auto paint store will have them

Kurt we have a stainless steel range top and boy what a pain to clean. The green scruff side of the sponge is abrasive enough to leave marks on it. I think some refrigerator magnet with a picture or something of that nature will be easiest, replacing the panel is very expensive, and in the long run you guys will put stuff on the fridge(if your like the rest of us). We have a 3" scratch on the front of ours, that now has a strategicly placed beer bottle opener with magnet on the back of it. So now I can pop a beer without hunting for an opener, and hide the scratch at the same time! A win/win! :)

Kurt thanks for posting the video too! Another thought is buy the pads online and have them shipped to you, probably cheaper than the roundtrip gas to Vegas! Or have Bob pick some up and drop them off for you!:D
