    I don't know if this would work, Kurt, but there is a product called Barkeepers Friend, kinda like Comet Cleanser, but made for stainless. Boaters use it a lot on the stainless fittings to remove stains and scratches, so maybe it might help you out.

    It is available at Publix here, but I don't know what large grocery stores you have out there.

    I still think you need to know what's on the surface before using any type of cleaner, if it's clearcoated the situation will only get worse if you use even a mild abrasive cleaner such as Barkeepers Friend.
