The problem as I see it is that there are people voting who have no idea how the country is supposed to work, how the original framers set it up to work. You should have to pass an extensive test before being allowed to vote and be required to explain how your vote would help the public good. We're putting dummies on the street with these programs such as No Child Left Behind who neither understand nor appreciate how the system could be improved. It's all part of the plan by big money to dumb down the electorate so they won't make waves.
Big Government will get bigger and bigger until it capsizes itself. There will come a day when the number of people sucking from the public trough will exceed the number of people filling the public trough.

In George Washington's time, you had to be a land owner before you could vote. I think re-instating that little formality would be a great idea. You'd have to be an American land owner though otherwise we'd all be speaking Chinese.

Richard,
I appreciate your perspective, and I know it comes with some level of experience. If you look at the percentage of the population in Maricopa County (Phoenix and surrounding areas) that derive their monthly income from some form of government (city/muni, county, or federal) it is a surprising number that is closer to 50% than it is to 25% - already approaching your feeding trough analogy. I don't know the number today, but about eight years back it was 38% and rising, as I recall.Roger
Enjoy the little things in life, and you may look back one day and realize that they were really the BIG things.
