Barb, Did the mechanic run the engine? Just be careful! Timing off and gas in the carb=backfire thru the carb!

Yeah Barb, when you say "...put some gas in the carb..." I assumed you were filling the float bowls so you could get thirty or forty seconds of run time. I'm not sure pouring gas into the intake is such a good idea, if that's what you're thinking, especially if you're planning on continuing to add fuel manually? Don't want to see anyone burned, or the Monte going up in flames after all your hard work.Roger

Good decision and change the fuel filter while you're at it. I'd check everything twice before trying to fire it for the first time. You've been at this too long for everything to go up in smoke.Ken Thomas

Well thats great news Barb.
I know you will be happy with the motor if it runs half way right.
Those are very good motors and they last forever.

If you are having thoughts about trouble with it starting (GAS and all) I'd do it out in the yard not in the shopCharlie

ok guys i have a question. while i am waiting for my fuel pump i am trying to hook up my oil pressure gauge. I have a autolite manual gauge in my car but a idiot light wire on the engine. how do i convert it to manual or do i have to buy another gauge.BARB

Pull the sending unit the wire is attached to and replace it with the proper size brass fitting. If you can run copper tube to the gauge as the plastic tubes have a habit of getting crimped or they can melt if they're exposed to too much heat.Ken Thomas

Barb,
Your manual guage has a nominal 1/8" plastic or copper tube to convey oil/pressure to the gauge, right? And that capilary is running out into the engine compartment, to the area of the sending unit? If so then all you need to do is pull the sending unit out and screw in the tubing connector, perhaps with an adapter if the thread sizes don't match. Like your electric sending unit may be 1/4" NPT, and your tube connector may be 1/8"NPT - the local hardware store will have a 1/4NPT male to 1/8NPT female adapter that will make everything fit. You don't need a new gauge, just the right pipe fittings.Roger

Welcome to CHR. I think that you need to hook up your vacuum advance. At part throttle when cruising you have less air and fuel in each cylinder, and the air-fuel mixture is not as densely packed...
