I check in here occasionally, my interests are mostly '32 Fords and Ford Flatheads but there have been a couple of times I thought I had something to contribute and made a post; I think its only two so far. But late yesterday I posted to a thread about F100 brakes/bearings and a message popped up to say that my post will be added when it has been approved by the moderator. Still not up as of now almost 24 hours later. Is this the standard procedure for this board? Not normal with the forums I usually frequent. Seems to me to be counter productive to encourage the silent majority.

You are right about that approval thing. I didn't know that existed either. I have never seen that on any forum I have joined, and I was able to post immediately on those. I also don't recall any delay in my posting here when I joined either. Bill can probably shed some light on that for us.

Bill, it's because of your low post count. The moderator does it with new members to make sure they're Hot Rodders and not Spammers!!!! I'm sure it will be approved and show up soon...we don't have an overabundance of mods on here, so sometimes it takes awhil....

Bill - most of us went through that 'acceptance' period. But with that said and since your post showed here, it looks like you are "in". Your photo posts will also be looked at as well for a short while. The wait is well worth it to keep the spam types out.

How do you know if an Engineer is outgoing?
If he looks at YOUR shoes when he talks to you, then he's outgoing!

I always love going to engineering seminars and looking around the table at lunch time. There will be ten engineers sitting around a table and only two or three talking. The rest are listening to the conversation and may interject occasionally, but it's that two or three that carry the conversation.

I think there are a lot of us on this forum that are the same way. We are listening to the conversation, we enjoy the conversation, but unless we think we have something to add we generally keep quiet.

I also think there are probably a lot of us here that are interested in hot rods but we aren't really "hot rodders". Maybe we don't have the time, tools, and money or maybe we are just too lazy. But for whatever reason we aren't doing it ourselves, it's fun to look at this site and see what the real "hot rodders" are doing and how they do it.

[QUOTE=34_40;394187]The part of this topic that gets my goat every time is that some people feel it is "their right" to receive an answer!

Yep. I have seen several contributors that have "attitude". It is annoying, but they are usually firmly "sat down" by one or more members who willingly share their time and their knowledge with anyone posting a serious question or comment.

My own goat is gotten by the horse's rear that asks a question, gets valid advice or information, then doesn't bother to say "thanks".

A year or two back a man needed information on slant sixes. I have plenty of that so I decided that it would better if I made a copy of a particular booklet (nine pages) and mailed it to him, which I did. It pleased him. Then some other dude said "Hey! I want one of those books, too"

The first guy thanked me and offered to pay me for postage, etc. A good guy.

The second guy, well, I have yet to hear from him. Not a good guy.

    Interesting thread, Don.

It's really been nice hearing from some folks who we don't hear from often or who we haven't heard from for a while. Mark in Memphis summed it up, people are just different from one another. Some are gabby and some are more quiet. Doesn't make one better than the other, it is just the way it is.

Other members may feel they have nothing to contribute, but I don't agree with that. Just posting on someones build thread that you like (or don't like) how they did something is rewarding to the original poster. It gets mighty lonely when you take the time to type up some update with pictures and no one says boo. Like the member who PM'd me said in that PM " I'm not looking for accolades, but it would be nice to know people have looked at the thread and that I am not posting in vain (paraphrased)."

You all brought out some very good points in this thread, thank you for taking the time to do that.

    Don

If i've got to put my.02 cents in, if i can help anybody with a rodding related problem i will. there is such a wealth of talent and experiance on this site, that
i usually don't have to comment.
some problems have been gone over many times and just need to be hunted down in the threads.
in my case i remember a little saying...
Better to be thought of as a fool, than to speak up and remove all doubt!

That's perfectly understandable; it's just that it was different to encounter this delay as I have never run into this before on other forums. At least one other forum I am familiar with has a "report this post" as a means to combat spam. I guess this forum has its own methods; but it might be a help to put something in the FAQ's or a sticky in the New Member Sign In forum to alert newbies to the policy. And yes, I should have posted in the New Members forum first but have always ignored that as a needless exercise as long as some minimum info was entered into my profile. Just a few comments to maybe improve this fine forum.

See what you started Don. I was happy sitting here reading and not typeing.Honestly I have been so busy since I retired I don't have the time I used to.I get on here if I have a question, and some times I answer one or two, but most of my time is spent in the shop. I too am on other forums but its not because I don't like it here its just there is different info in other places. Now I'll go back in the weeds and read

I just discovered this thread and read all 8 pages... As for me, I usually try to answer questions or make suggestions/ comments on things I have had experience with. If it's something I don't feel qualified to answer, I keep quiet.

I have been welding, fabricating chassis and components, and doing bodywork for over 40 years, but when it comes to engine work, I leave that for someone with more expertise. I started doing bodywork when I was 15 (62 now) and did my first all-over paint job at 17. Back in the '70s I did a considerable amount of custom painting including 'flake and candies, but that was in the days of good ol' lacquer paint. I still paint my own stuff, but have not used any candy colors since everything went to urethane. I will give my comments or advice on metal shaping, bodywork, and basic painting, but I defer custom paint questions to Hotrodpaint or Spray Tech; it's just not my expertise...

For the newbies and beginners on here - never be afraid to ask a question. I am a retired school teacher and any teacher will tell you that the only stupid question is the one that isn't asked. If someone flames you for asking an honest question, he is an ass and belongs on a different site. This is one of the friendliest sites on the entire internet, there is a wealth of knowledge here, and the overwhelming majority of us are eager to pass that knowledge along to anyone who wants it...
