Lots of silent members on here.

Hi all long time no speak, today is the day. This post is right up my alley, as I sometimes sat on the end of the person Don is speaking of. There are a lot of super nice people here with a wealth of knowledge. But this and many other sites are really just clicks of people. Kinda like high school, either your in or your out of the loop. You may not see it, but if you are not in the click, you see it. Just for an example Ken said he usually does not respond as he is not good at writing. This is not true, you respond when everyone of your click group friends start a thread. Whether it be small talk cutting up, or an answer to the car question, your writing is very good. Now this is not just you, you are only my example. IC2 phrased it nicely, (QUOTE IC2,Again, it looks as though the core group has posted) Nice name for the select few, core group.

A lot of newbs get just swept under the car mat, because maybe people are just not wanting to connect to the newbes concerns. Newbes come here searching for advice because they are at a wits end, and after reading for a few weeks they get the nerve up to ask a question. And a lot of people say strike 1, newbe, strike 2, stupid question, strike 3, hes just got a wore out junk camaro, strike 4, Don or Tech posted a better deal over here. That was usually the ones I responded to were the ones that sat all day and no one responded to. Man I caught crap from a couple people here constantly for poor spelling, and bad punctuation. WHO CARES, its a hot rod site not a jr high class. I even had a member here call me stupid once, no one came to my aid. I guatantee 85% of the regulars here are smarter then me, but I came here to look at car stuff and unwind from the daily grind, not get bitsh slapped for poor spelling.

I just consideder this site as a wash and gave up trying to fit in, like beating a dead horse, and I beat that horse for a long time. I will be 49 here in a couple months and just dont want to deal with drama and trying to get someone to at least acknowledge my presence with a response. So from a perspective of the ignored, theres how we see it. So go ahead and get your laugh, toss out your well we never do that, check my spelling, and accept that this may be true. Its like a club and a school function, either your in or your out. Like I said there are a lot of great people here and I still read a lot here, I just am not welcome as a true friend here, and I am O.K. with that. I would help you if you were stranded, thats just the way I roll. So take care all those who were alright with me, and those that were not, you know what you can do.

If your concern for this post is figure how to work with new members on board things will have to change here and open up to a more user friendly atmosphere. I am back editing this as I was looking for the newbe unanswered question of the day. To prove my case in point, Well I found 3 stayed all day no acknowledgement. One was 2 days old, not one reply, not a rocket scientist question, basic generic stuff. I think sometimes that some of you think you are just above the person asking the question that you are not going to give then the time of day. And dont bother with the newbe, I answered his question, not as good as some of you could, but at least I did it. Branch out, and be cool to everyone, you were once a newbe too.!!!!!!!

And yes I will come back to disscuss this if anyone feels the need to open your mind a bit.

Mooneye - I guess that you have a problem here, for which, if I had anything to do with it, I'll apologize. It's really too bad that you feel that way as there is a bunch of info and a lot of great guys here. As far as newbe (newbies??) well, regardless of whatever they do, they have to feel comfortable posting plus they do have to make an effort. We can't read their minds or know if they are upset. A clique - join any social club you can attend personally. It's not a clique, it's who you feel comfortable with there as well. As far as being upset by another member - well that too is normal. There are folks here that have PO'd me - even you have tried in the distant past. Again, an answer to a statement is sometimes based on a previous statement that a person has felt is downright wrong, personal or whatever. Grow a thicker skin!! I did pretty quickly when I got involved in on-line forums. It's unfortunate that most don't know each other in a face to face relationship but the anonymity of computerized long distance communications plus the fact that most of us use screen names takes away a lot of that personable good will to each other. As you can see, we have folks from all over the US, Europe, New Zealand, South America and Australia. And we do seem to communicate pretty well most of the time. Personal writing skills - some can do well, others don't. No big deal. I used to manage an engineering group - they had some of the worst writing skills - ever!!

Now, as far as age goes, I know that I'm significantly older then your 49. Drama - I guess you perceive that - I don't see any. Being welcomed here - well I for sure don't run the forum, but I have yet to see you or anyone else unwelcome. If I don't agree with you or any one else, I'll either tell you or stop posting to that thread.

This thread - Don, thanks for starting it now. You seem to have brought out lots of quiet folks who maybe wont be so quiet later

well i should of taken this post serious .ok so i will.i post on here maybe way way to much .as for a hog well if thats what someone thinks about me that fine .many in my life have been there when i neede help .i am just trying to pay some of it back .help others some things i may post on. this is the stuff i doing in my life now .not what i did. much like painting or body work for many years. i am not a strong speller .so i not going to get in depth post and pull and past a bunch of stuff off other spots from me . i am not that hot with the computer. there have been some on hear that cry about the spelling deal.. one guy did call me out on my very poor spelling. maybe he needed to feel better then me. so he had to take a poke fine ok .as for the click never have never will be .if i post some thing you like it fine if not fine . as for posting on that i did on any of my cars or builds for others . i may never. as my stuff are about as far has i am ever going on them . now i am building/machine engines day in day out as long as i can stand on a cement floor for others and machine parts this takes all my time now. so i may post on a engine build . as for how i post? i try to think about how it may come off .. but what you read is about how i talk with better spelling so if you do not like me on here .you may not care much for me in the flesh and that fine with me :3dSMILE:

Mooneye, you bring out some very good points. Sorry if some things have not set well with you in the past, I think if you would have mentioned them at the time those issues could have been put to bed right then and there. You are right about no one should criticize anyone else for their grammar or writing skills. This site is about cars and is not an English class. I was busy reading the little books hidden in my school books and missed a lot of the skills I could really use today. :o

You also bring out another good point about how a newbe can be ignored some times. I have seen this myself and try to post something so the thread will go back to the top where others will see it and hopefully respond. Some of the problems are also the fault of the newbe. We see so many times where a new poster will ask for help with a problem, but he/she provides so little info that any suggestions we might have are going to be pure guesswork. Another problem is that some newbes post a question and then never come back or respond to what we have said. We see this all the time where someone posts once and then disappears.

Give the forum another chance Mooneye, and if something happens that you don't care for, just speak up and let us know. We're all big boys here (well, except for Barb :D) so we can take it and maybe need to hear it.

About the spelling and punctuation

I was sick during the 7th grade and missed a lot with English and never seemed to catch up. I have a problem with punctuation and grammar but I do the best I can. I can spot mistakes in the news media so we are not perfect. Say it the best you can and let it go. If people do not understand they can ask how you meant it or figure it out.

I went into the Army when I was 17 years old some of the smart guys found ways to stay out. I don’t judge them.

I have a big college dictionary next to my computer and sometimes I will look up the correct spelling, sometimes not. I’m a talker in person and can talk for hours about nothing (like Jerry Seinfeld’s show about nothing). If I feel comfortable with a person I don’t have to worry if they are grading me. I have been keeping a daily journal for almost ten years. My daughter the English major wanted me to write so the grandkids would know a little about me when they get older and I’m gone. Even writing every day still does not make up for what I lost in School. I wish I had tried harder because you are judged by the way you speak.

I like this site and the way people have the same interest.
I don’t feel like I’m being judged even though there are some very smart people on here. If a person has the brains they are very fortunate but if they use them to put other people down then they have a lot more to learn in life then they think.

Mooneye - I'm going to direct this response to you because of you using me as an example. If I haven't responded to you when I should have I apologize, I will try and do better. As for as clicks go, maybe that is true. For me I'm closer to some people on this site than others. Only because I have had more contact with them. Don and I have discussed privately about my company opening up a satellite division in Fort Meyers, Steve (stovens) has actually visited my wife and I, Uncle Bob and Mike in Tucson and I meet at the SEMA show every year. So they know my personality, where others on here may take something wrong, so I'm careful not to offend anyone.
My days are pretty full, so when I go on here it is relaxing to me and I enjoy all the great people on this site. I have learned things on here and I try to share what I do, to help anyone that thinks I have a good idea.
I hope that explains how I post. So yes I do post to some people more often than others. But, I would never join a club that would have me as a member.

I don't think any apologies are necessary regarding why some of us may post on one member's thread versus not posting on another member's thread. It just happens. Sometimes I look at a thread and refrain from posting (even if it is someone I am personally close to on here) for a multitude of reasons. I might feel I have nothing to contribute, or I may have just got done posting on another thread and am sheepish about having posted maybe too many times that day, or whatever. It doesn't mean I am not interested in that thread, or didn't get something out of it.

I noticed too Mooneye that you posted on the question by Axed29, you said:

And you are right, it is not good that a question went 2 days without someone trying to help him. However, why didn't you or someone else jump in and try to help him earlier? I read his question, and actually had typed out an answer, but I didn't post it because I felt I jump in too often as it is on these and maybe someone else should have a chance. There are a ton of people on here who could have answered that question but the "clique" as you call us always seem to be the ones who have to do the answering.

That was the intent of me starting this thread, to bring out the fact that there are a lot of people who sign in every day on this forum, but for whatever reason the majority just read and don't post. It would have been very cool if one of those silent majority would have jumped in and offered some suggestions to Axle29. They would not have been beaten down if what they posted was a different opinion than someone else might have, and no one would have been upset because a newbe was trying to jump in and post........quite the opposite. Pat, Dave and all the others who normally field these questions would probably enjoy the break from them having to do it themselves.

It's good that some of the hard feelings came out though, I'm glad you brought them up Mooneye. Otherwise, we have no way of knowing, and we don't want any member to feel excluded in any way.

I have noticed that some of my post have not had many replies, but I refuse to be bitter knowing that it takes time to post replies and many just don't have time to reply to all threads that they read. If I really need help on a problem, I post with this in mind and word the post heading accordingly. I have received very valuable info from many replies that I have been very thankful to receive. I take the other post in stride, and go on. From the other side, many times I don't post replies because I feel that others are much more knowledgeable about certain things, and at times just can't take the time to reply to post that I can answer. I understand replies take time and am thankful when I get them. All are much appreciated. I reply when possible as payback for the help I receive on this forum. Several of these guys go way out of their way to answer more than their share of post.

I want to post more often but i do not know the answer to the question. I always try to welcome the newbies and to add a couple of words about whatever he is asking about. if i can some how help i will. though mostly i just read and learn from those who have far more knowledge than I. But the members here have always been very, very, kind in answering all of my questions or just letting me spout off about a percieved injustice. You guys here including mooneye have given me the courage to try things with my motors and cars that i would have never tried before. I am at the point in my schooling that i am attempting my own engine install. except for the heavy lifting this is totally my project from the modifications to the wiring. I could not be even close to doing this without the wonderfull people here. Alot of times I will offer advice to a newbie and do not get a response back. i just chalk it off to that i was wrong or that he sees a girls name and dismisses the advice. His loss. but i keep trying to help any that i can.

Last year,I posted some pix of a job that I was doing,rebuilding a Deco rides Lincoln Zephyr s/d,and doing mods as well,as the body was nothing short of SHOCKING.....From memory,I dont think I got any replies,not sure now,but it did get a number of views,,,so I thought,,Oh well,they dont like that vehicle,no probs,will do something else..Thanks to Tech,for starting the three word story,,most amusing,and nothing like talking a bit of garbage on that thread...Talk about imagination...:eek::whacked:

I’m a member of a few sites and I visit them pretty often. There is one site that I enjoy but I just check it out no more posting for me on that site. I asked a question and wanted and answer not an opinion. I made the mistake of saying I didn’t need opinions I needed an answer to a direct question. It seemed liked a lot of people sided with the smart a-s. So I sign in check it out and don’t respond to anything.

Lamin8r, I must have missed that thread about the rebuilding the Deco Rides. I’m going to see if it’s still around.

PS I went through your post and couldn't find the build of the Deco Rides Zephyr

Sometimes I go through the archives to see what I’ve missed.

Well, I hope I haven't offended anyone by not posting or by posting what I have---

I will be 70 years old in the spring and I try to leave people alone---however----- I find it easier to use a bunch of dashes instead of smilies----

Having been around cars, tractors, military stuff, airplanes, and all sorts of racing stuff, I have done a lot in my lifetime and have few regrets for what I either have done or not done---

When I reply to a post, it is because I have done it, and sometimes I ask for more info so I can give a better more correct answer to the question---it irks me that a poster (usually a newbie) doesn't come back with any info that is usable if he responds at all!!!!

I have tools, guns,fishing rods and a pick up truck and trailer----in the garage the machinery includes machines for every engine operation minus a crank grinder and a pin boring machine that Pat now has----welders, saws, mills and lathe---and a Hunter alignment rack and some I beams for frame construction---

I have built many racers from karts to Pro-Stocks and several hotrods

I don't discuss bodywork or paint on here and I think the body guys and painters know why----but I will help with factual info from many years of experience of working on/ building/racing anything automotive and even get into discussions on aviation matters.

I seem to remember helping Mooneyes with some nitro info and never did get full feedback on results---but I also seem to remember something was going on in his family that sidetracked him and possibly his withdrawal from here and he just never got back up to speed----

I also have asked Bill to get Denny back on here as he is a good guy and has more teck referances tucked away than the library of congress but it seems they don't want him back, even with the level of help he gave out.

It's going to be a sad day when all of the guys like your self are gone along with your knowledge and wiliness to help. I'm 63 soon to be 64 if the Lord is willing and I'm still trying to learn new things.

Two words: new baby...

Actually more to it than that... much less "free" time with the job I started a year and a half ago and the boy is going to be one year next month. I do check in almost daily using my phone and I'm much more selective over the threads I choose to follow because my time for that is limited... unlike the good ol' days that I would read everything that came in and reply on many.

I post rarely these days because it's a pain to type much more than a couple lines using a phone and I have a tendency to make lengthy posts. I've been watching this thread for two days and finally borrowed the wife's laptop so I can chuck in my two cents (or is it a nickel now?).

I miss being more actively involved here but it just hasn't been in the cards... I do enjoy checking in and seeing what's going on and often want to contribute to some of the threads but it just hasn't been practical lately.

There is no need to appologize from anyone what so ever. I was just throwing out some very heart felt observations over my many years here. And trying to give reason to Dons intended post concern. Its from a stand point that can only be seen fron the last couple years of watching and not posting. I check in about once a week to catch up and see if there is anything I can learn from, and just keep my distance.

But please remember this is a good site to learn for anyone on any level, but if you keep the newbes waiting in line too long, they will get in line somewhere else. Its just a respect thing. If you see a newbe leaving very little information, its probably because they do not know how to or what to ask. So give what you got and ask for more. Ken and IC2 nothing personal at all. I just used you in example from what you stated in the thread. I probably could have pulled something from a lot of members here with similar circumstances. It was the luck of the draw. I hope everyone is well these days.

My area of expertise (if you can call it that) is pretty narrow. My hotrodding experience is pretty much all Chrysler, so when somebody posts a question about old Walter P's engines, well, I have owned everything from flat head sixes to hemi's, so I can respond with a reasonable degree of accuracy.

I hope.

I'll admit that a lot of what I know came about because I did it wrong the first time, and that's the best way to learn something permanently.

Anyway, there have been times when I felt I could have provided somebody with a bit of needed information, or encouraged a younger member with his first build, or shown sympathy for a member with health problems, or other situations.

Then I didn't do it.

I'll try to shape up.

Will that keep me out of the "silent member" dog house. Don?

Well I have read some but not all of the coments here, andI fit in with
several...First of all I ask more questions than I have answers for, and
I have found that if I Had the info some of you guys have forgotten
I would consider myself blessed...I am an old school hot rodder, and
was out of it for years then got interested later in life..I have and can
build a small block chevy with no problems....Then came the Big Block
with all the goodies and I felt lost..I will have to say this forum has a
wealth of knowledge, and I am more a picker of the brain type. Not
too stupid, just out of my comfort range on some things, but I will have
to say with out naming names, that I could not ask for a better bunch
of guys to be associated with...I visit the forum almost daily and really
enjoy the coments. As someone previously said, when I have an answer
for someone, it seems someone else has already answered it and I go on
to something else...I will try to be more alert to the new members we
have, and I hope they don't get discourgaged...One of my problems in
posting is maybe not giving enough information...Just my thoughts....
