Whiplash,
Sorry for that, I thought you were just in Wa. St. I had the good fortune of being born in the heart of Redwood country (Eureka Ca.) and have traveled many miles on the 101. The stretch between San Francisco all the way to the tip of the Olympic Peninsula in Wa. St. is a beautiful drive. BTW, I have driven through that tree.
Jack.
Me too Jack, the TREE that is! The 101 cruise is stunning but not as good as the olden days... to many things gone and way to many condos built along te way!!!
Amen Greg.
It's been a few years since I have driven the 101 between Eureka and S.F. but I seem to recall it is all 4 lane or more now and some of the attractions are bypassed. When I first traveled that road in the mid to late 40s with my folks it was all 2 lane and some of it narrow 2 lane on the side of a rock cliff with a rock guardrail. It was also a all day trip. When the Mrs and I drive to Ca. now days we take I 5 to I 80. We are going to Sunnyvale Ca. in July for my 50th HS reunion and would sure like to take the 101 and visit my cousin in Eureka but time won't allow.:(:(
Jack.
Hi Jack and Greg, yes I think it doesn't matter where in the world one lives everybodies lifes have got busier to the stage that we all are in a rush to get from point A to B we forget how simple and uncomplicated our lifes where and how much slower we all travelled. I would still like to drive that 101 but I am afraid that I would be stopping and detouring off the main road to explore so it would take me days to complete the drive.
Whiplash may be on to something. Sad but true.:(
Jack.
Whip...
You come on over and I'll take you up north to Chuckanut Drive going to Bellingham. Not a real long cruz but absolutely beautiful right along the waterfront. I try to cruz along there a couple times a summer on the way to Birch Bay, I guess you could call it... "Our short 101"! :toocool:
Greg
Greg, ya keepin' count of all this?:D Bob's GG at Puyallup sounds good. I usually get there on Wednesday so I can find a place to park the motorhome at the RV lot. My son-in-law Brent will also be there Fri./Sat..
Larry M.
Yep, I sure am Larry! That would be a good opportunity for sure! Well put the word out and see who can make it. I know I'm a "Good Guy"... Greg
Since you and I always seemed to take a lot of pictures at the old Seattle Roadster Show (back when I was elbuick37)... do you know what happened there? I heard some skuttle-butt about the owner but nothing reliable. I really miss that event.:(
Greg
Sorry to hijack your thread again Greg but I have been on Goggle Earth again cruisin down Chuckanut Drive down to Bellingham and ,yes you guys live in the most scenic spot on earth, what a drive and I would want to stop at Oyster Creek Inn for a couple of light refreshments and also try the seafood out at the restuarant on the beach. Another spot I could fall in love with is Wildcat Cove.. Yes when I hit the jackpot, that will be differently on my list of cruises I want too accomplish in the USA. The point is I don't gamble so the chance of winning the jackpot are slim...:rolleyes::rolleyes:
No problem... I have been to the Oyster Creek Inn several times but the last time I went by it was closed (I mean CLOSED). I'll have to go for another cruz if it ever quits raining! That whole area through the Skagit and Whatcom counties is beautiful. Keep on crusin Whip!!! :D
That's 'bout all I heard, just "skuttle-butt" too. To me the show has been going down hill the past few years it was running. Hardly anything coming up here from the big shows in Calif. Its a shame, as I really enjoyed the show. I met the new owners of the show in 2008 when I got my Media Pass and they mentioned how they were going to turn it around,,,,,, never happened tho.:(
Im also from Shelton Wa .
Norm
This year even the Tacoma Dome "Mild to Wild" show got canceled! Man, I hope that's not a sign of the times for the Seattle area hot rodder sscene! We need some more good venues around these parts. Of course we'll never see the likes of the California venues. :(
Greg
Yeah, its hard to beat some of the Calif. shows, the Grand National Roadster Show was great.
I guess the Mild To Wild Show will no longer be in the Tacoma Dome but moved to the Events Center at the Puyallup Fairgrounds for 2011:
Show promotion is a tough gig. Seems it's always been tough in the Seattle area. The Portland Rod & Custom show was cancelled this year too (I think the same promoter as the Seattle show)
BTW, just got a call regarding tomorrow's Maple Valley Days car show for any that are interested. We usually have the show on the shores of Lake Wilderness, but because of all the rain we've had lately it's flooded this year. The show will be held (and it's supposed to be SUNNY tomorrow!) at the Walmart side lot in Covington. Yep, the same place we do the normal Friday night cruise in.
Good place for a show Bob and will attract a lot of Walmart spectators (may or may not be a good thing ) I like the Covington area and was at the Les Schwab Show there earlier this spring which was also a nice sunny day! I would be there tomorrow but am getting ready for a pre-show shindig at my place for a show on Sunday.
Greg
BTW... thanks for the update Larry on the Mild to Wild Show! I think I'll like it better at Puyallup myself.
Greg
I'm not sure they're all that into our kind of cars; www.peopleofwalmart.com :LOL:
With some more Deer pics. Took these today, 1st one from my back yard, rest from my neighbors yard. Was walking from the shop to the house and thought I saw something in the neighbors yard. Sure enough so I continue to the house and grab the camera. Came back out and the deer had moved but happened to get a shop from my yard, didn't know if I would get any more. Eased into the neighbors yard and found there were two. One had a nice 3 point rack, the other was just barely a 3 point. Either one by this fall would go good in the freezer.
Jack.
That is so cool Jack, thanks for sharing your backyard pets with us. I enjoy a nice venison steak but I don't think I could shoot one of those friendly creatures for the freezer.
Those are in deed great pictures Jack! It is wonderful to be able to see the wildlife up close in our yards like that! We get shots like this down at our lake place in Mossyrock all the time and have eagles that live in the trees at our place that we throw squawfish to... it is awesome!
BTW, I agree with Whip as I no longer would be able to shoot these animals either. I used to be an avid hunter when I needed the food to survive. I am not at all against it, I just can't bring myself to hunt anymore. Greg
Whiplash and Greg,
Thanks for the comments. I still hunt but at 67 am slowing down a bit. I hunt walk in (or bike in) only, helps in my war against the bulge, but if I had to hunt to eat we would starve to death. Better hunter than getter.:LOL: Took a couple of pics of the wall behind where I am now typing. Greg, the Elk was shot in the Winston Creek area not far from Mayfield Lake, the bear was shot 5-6 miles from my house, not a huge bear as bears go but the skin measured 6'1" from nose to tail, 190 to 200 lbs. I used to hunt in rain snow or sun, I am now mostly fair weather hunter. As soon as the rain stops around here I will start my summer scouting.:3dSMILE:
Jack.
Jack - My place is at the Winston Creek end of the lake. As a matter of fact, you turn off of Winston Creek Road at the church/youth camp ground at Haddler Road. There is still a lot of good hunting up in the hills there! I have a favorite spot about half way to Swafford Pond where I go target shooting.
I am heading down there Monday morning to do some yard work, etc; for a couple days and looking forward to it! Seeing we're showing pictures, here's a couple down at the lake...
Oh yeah Jack... These are what we "Hunt" down at the lake...
Big Tiger Muskies caught by my son and grandson and me trying! :D
Greg,
That's a beautiful place you and your family have there, have been by that camp many times, even ate at the Light House? Inn once. We used to have a camping lot at Cowlitz Timber Trails but sold it a few years ago. Do they still stock those tiger muskies in the lake? Got to get off this computer and work on the 34.
Jack.
Yes they do still plant them Jack. I think 2,400 were planted this year as I recall. We have had a place down there since '89 and bought the current place in '95. It is a beautiful area of the state!
Greg
Those photos are just amazing Greg and can I congratulate you for having life jackets on those young fellas' . Awesome fish too, are they eatable, and man I so do want to come across to your beautiful backyards.
Whiplash,
Come on over, you are welcome anytime. Might even find a spare bedroom to put you up.;) Don't expect to see deer everyday though, the deer come out mostly after dark. May catch them out in the daylight once or twice a year. BTW, years ago (1982 to be exact) I and some of my fishing buddies appeared in one of your "Rod&Rifle Yearbooks". A friend of mine was a budding outdoor writer and had one of his articles accepted. It featured Steelhead and Salmon fishing in Wa. St. I pulled out my copy of the mag. just now to get the year and issue right.:3dSMILE: If you know anybody who saves old issues take a look.
Jack.
Thanks very much for the invitation Jack.. I read your response out to mum, (who I promised to look after here in our home to the day she dies) and she was so excited for me and then she said, quite sadly, heck you wouldn't be able to go until I die... So I told her in know uncertain terms that although I'm 53 years old I still had a heap of time left to fulfil the only thing on my bucket list, visit my new rodding friends in the home of rodding, USA... So again thanks, and this computer brings friends closer then ever before..
Whiplash, aint that the truth...I have only seen a few bits of California,Vegas, and the corner of Arizona,on the way back to Huntington Beach, and that was in 1991..The photos that you ,Greg, and Jack have posted have made my day,for it is truly a beautiful part of the country, and it has been our goal to get up to America for a trip in the near future...we have had a few set backs financially,so things have been put on hold for a while,,,but, yeah,,comin back up one day...:D:cool:
As Jack stated... you guys are always welcome! I know we have lots of room and there is usually some sort of WILD life activity going on! :D
Whip - They say the Tigers are edible but I have never tasted them. We always catch and release to let them get even bigger! They are a territorial fish so we have caught a couple of them several times. We pulled one up the summer before last that was 50 inches with a 18" girth!!! Two of the state records have been caught right in front of our dock.
Let us know when you are coming and Jack, Bob and I will roll out the red carpet!
Cheers,
Greg
Thanks for that Greg,,Lynda and I had hoped to take a trip a couple of years ago, but,it wasnt to be,and it probably wont happen for another year or three now, but, rest assured, when we get up there,we will be doing as many miles in that neat country as we possibly can..We intend to do a fair amount of travelling,,and I know that Whip will be saving the pennies too,,Yeah, also wanna tackle one of those great big tigers you have in the lakes up there..Like I said,we gonna travel a bit, between Washington, and through the guts of that great country to Florida,Might have to sell some toys to achieve this...:(Oh well, never mind..:D
Well, if the weather liars are correct should be clear skies, sunshine, and 80 degrees (+-), just about perfect! What do we want to do? If we want to park in a group then we need to agree on where and how. Friday is comparatively easy as the competition for space is more relaxed. Saturday takes more logistics................if there's any interest in that game. Either way I'm planning to be there those two days and am open to suggestions.
Bob, Larry and All,
As I don't as yet have anything to display I will be there Sat only (unless someone has a better idea) and just walk through the gate. Once inside I will check in with "Uncle" to find out what is going on and who is meeting where and spend most of the day looking at the cars and getting some new ideas for my build.:HMMM::)
Jack.
