Hey Mike, just how hard are they to install??
The reason I ask is because my mom's went out in her late model Park Ave & they want some crazy amount to see whats wrong w/them & then if they are bad it even get worse.

Are they designed to go under the upholstery or do you just sit on them like a heating pad? Sure doesn't look very hi-tech to me..

Hi,
Here's the installation instructions.
GENERAL ADVICE:
· The installer is liable for any damage due to improper fitting or not following these instructions.
· All steps explained in this manual are to be followed with great care. Fitting has to be performed by qualified personal only. Improper installation will void the limited warranty provided by the manufacturer and may cause physical damage to equipment or people.
· The seat heating system has to be connected to the onboard power supply exactly as described in this manual. It is necessary that the system is capable of driving up to 10 Amp continuous current per heated seat.
· The seat heating elements have to be fitted without any folds.
· The seat heating system shall only be connected to a 12 Volt DC power supply.
The separate seat heating elements for cushion and back are to be connected to the supplied electronic control unit only.
· The width of the heating elements is not to be modified by folding or cutting.
· Fitting the seat heating system to seats with only the supplied material.
· The wire harness has to be fitted to the seat in a way, that the full range of movement of the seat is possible without damaging the wire harness. At the same time make sure that the wire harness is never going to intrude into the leg space of either the front or back passengers.
· Cars fitted with side airbags have to be treated according to the manufacturers fitting manuals. The seat heating element is only to be attached to the middle of the seat foam. The connections of the side airbag(s) have to be handled thoroughly and should never be connected to any kind of power supply during the fitting process.
Step 1: Dismantling the seat
Secure the car on a level surface by enabling the brakes.
1.2 Disconnect the car’s battery. If you have any doubt concerning the layout of the car’s wire harness consult the wiring diagram provided by the manufacturer.
1.3 Dismantle the seat that will be fitted with the heating pads. In most cases striping the seat cover is easier with the seat out of the car.
1.4 To dismantle the seat, remove the plastic covers and remove the screws.
Take the seat completely out of the interior of the car.
1.5 Remove all seat covers in the area you are planning to fit the seat heater and wire harness.
Step 2: Striping the seat cover
2.1 Separate cushion and back from each other by removing the covers and unscrewing the connecting screws. It is advised to put the seat on a dedicated worktable for the following steps.
2.2 Remove the cover of both seat and back. To do so remove and dispose all upholstery clips. Unhook all other connections using a suitable screwdriver.
2.3 Make sure that there are no loose metal parts left on the foam. Clean the seat foam from any other debris.
2.4 Recheck again whether the seat heating elements will fit. There must be a minimum of 11 inches of free space between the lateral channels. The easiest way to do this is to lay the heating elements on seat and back as shown in picture 1 below. The length of the elements can be shortened but the width is fixed. Channels running alongside the heating element within the heated area cannot be tolerated.
Step 3: Fitting the cushion heating element:
3.1 Lay the heating element labeled “Bottom” with the labeled side up on top of the foam as shown. The supply wires have to be fitted below the back so they will not be noticed in the finished seat (use a razor blade to make a small incision in the foam so the wire will lay flush in the cut) Fit the heating and make sure not to fold any of the areas covered with adhesive tape. Only the length is variable and can be cut to fit.
Note: Never cut in areas covered with adhesive tape! Areas covered with adhesive tape have to be glued on a leveled surface only.
3.2 Remove the tape covering paper and attach the element at the front and rear of the heating element. Use the supplied tape to secure the sides of the heating element.
3.3 Fit the cushion cover to the cushion tie down points with the enclosed cable ties instead of the metal upholstery clips. Do not use any kind of metal cable ties or clips. While fastening in the area of the connection wires, make sure not to crush or squeeze the wires. In addition pay attention that there are no folds in the heating element, caused by the process of re-attaching the cover.
Step 4: Fitting the back heating element.
To fit the back heating element - labeled “back” – follow steps 3.1 to 3.3
Step 5: Reassemble the seat.
Step 6: Assembling the wire harness and switch
6.1 While running the wire harness you have to pay attention, that the wire cannot be cut, squeezed or damaged in any other way. The wire harness and control unit are to be attached to the seat frame securely.
6.2 Plug the open connectors of the wire harness onto the open wires from the seat and back heating element. Fix the wire harness and the control unit to the seat frame.
6.3 Run the wire harness to the dashboard, center console or side seat shield. Drill a 20mm hole in the panel, pull the connecting wire through and then plug in the switch and push the switch into the panel.
Step 7: Electrical connection and function test
7.1 Connect the last two open wires:
Black to a GOOD Ground
Red to the car power supply of 12 Volt DC.
*Connect to a switched source capable of driving 10 Amps continuous current.
FAQ and Troubleshooting
Can I double up the heat element? No, the system is not designed for this.
How do I troubleshoot the seat heater? -First, check the integrity of the element and look for any wire breaks. Second, the heater’s resistance values are approximately 4 Ohms. If you cannot read a resistance value across the heater, the element may be damaged. In the high setting, the voltage should read approximately 13.5 volts and in the low setting, the element voltage should approximately half of the high voltage.
Can I cut the element? - YES/NO - You may cut the length of the element but you cannot cut the width of the element. There is a conductive strip that runs along each side of the element which provided the power to the element. If this is cut, the element will not work.
Can I cut hole or strips in the middle of the element? - Yes, you may cut access hole for hog rings or tie-downs as long as you stay away from the conductive strips on the outside.
Can I hog ring through the element? - No, the element should not be in contact with metal objects that could potentially ground the heater. The supplied plastic tie-wraps can be used to replace the hog rings or access hole can be cut for the hog rings.
When I bench test the heater, the heater does not seem to get warm? - The heater is designed identically to Automotive OEM Specifications and is the same element found in cars today. The system is designed to be used inside the seat and with an occupant in the seat. The foam, trim and occupant insulate the heater, letting the heater reach it’s designed set-point. If the heater is turned on, on a flat bench, the bench and the open air will remove the heat. Technically, you would be heating the air around the heater. The temperature values of the heater in this situation will vary due to ambient air temperature and bench composition and will be well below the set-point. To test the heater, sandwich the heater between 2 pieces of foam and then check the temperature after several minutes.
When I bench test the heater, the heater works and then stops?- The heater is designed with a bi-metal thermostat which turns the heater on and off. When the thermostat is closed, the heater is active and when it opens, the power is shut off the elements. In open air, the element will reach it’s set-point quickly and when the thermostat opens, the elements cool down quicker that the thermostat so when you touch the element, there is no heat even though the thermostat is still cooling down.Mike Forte
