    1968 Mustang Fastback 428 Cobra Jet, 4-Speed, Unrestored

     



    The success of the 1967 Shelby GT500’s 428 Police Pursuit package brought big news for 1968 Mustang buyers, when on April 1st, 1968, Ford announced the potent new 428 Cobra jet engine, a specially modified version of the FE fitted with Low Riser heads with larger valves, a 735-cfm Holley four-barrel carburetor mounted on an aluminum 427 racing intake, a NASCAR windage tray in the oil pan and functional Ram-Air.

    The vast majority of these cars were subjected to harsh use, so it is a wonderful surprise to find one in such fine original condition as this lovely Candy Apple Red fastback. When we say “original”, we mean it: this pristine 1968 Cobra Jet 4-speed possesses all original paint, interior and engine compartment, and shows approximately 85,000 miles on the clock. On top of that foundation is the fact that this Mustang GT is in marvelous condition and has obviously been exceptionally well cared for.

    A detailed Marti Report tells the story of a nicely optioned performance pony car, with a 4-speed manual and 3.91 Traction-Lok to back up the engine’s 335 horses, and power steering, power disc brakes and wide F70-14s to handle it all. The Red standard bucket seat interior features deluxe seat belts, headrests and an AM radio.

    The Cobra Jet engine option was introduced well into the model year and added almost 25 percent to the Mustang’s base price,

    one of the most unbeatable street cars i remember from forever ago was a 428 68 stang .. sure wish i had it now .. it would wipe out 427 vettes like they were dragging a house

    ...but not my '57 327 Vette! I ran a couple of them... no contest! :-)~

    Of course... to be fair... I also beat some 427 'Vettes too. :-)~

    Not all of them had 3.91:1 Traction-Lock with - 4-Speed . That could make all the Difference .

    I sold that Vette a very long time ago..... so we'll never know. :-)~

    The cars that I consistantly had the most trouble with were the 440 Torqueflite Mopars! While I was spinning tires, they hooked up and left!

    I got a 72 vette right now and that thing has so many problems I hate it.
    I'll take a 67 Mustang with any engine in it over that Vette.
    In my opion a vette is a over priced piece of fibor glass junk.
    I am sure lots of guys will be upset with me but I own one and have
    had nothing but problems with it. My 67 mustang never once left me walking
    and I beat the tar out of it. Then some low life stoled it, I would still own that car.
