im finally gonna have 3 pedals under my feet in the race car:D got the clutch unit all picked out. single iron disc unit from ram. offers alot of adjustability.:D, dave how were the mcleod dual disc units working for you? how many runs out of a set of discs?
traded the automatic straight acorss for a 4 speed:D
I might take offense to this thread, but I know exactly what you mean. I prefer to push in a clutch and yank on a handle as well! :LOL:
They're ok, Scooter--Haven't changed up the discs to put the slicks on and run yet, but it does quite well on the street,,,,going to take a lot to beat the Soft-lock on the track though... I'm going to do some studying on the dual disc and spend some phone time with the McCleod tech... I think there's a lot of clutch tuning to be done with the disc material as well as spring pressures and finger weights..... I think when test and tune weekend comes in the spring, I'm going to go with two or three different disc combinations and do some playing.... I know they're a bunch more $$$$$, but if you're going racing ONLY next year with the 3 pedal, give some thought to the soft lock!!!! By far the most consistent launching clutch I've ever tried!!!!!
PS--Forgot to ask, what did you finally come up with for a tranny????? There's some Nash's showing up on Racing Junk in the $1100-1500 range---
just a muncie. i figured it will be ok since im only gonna be running cheater slicks or my sportsmans and the 302 doesnt have alot of torque. as soon as i can im gonna get a g-force, jerico , or a doug nash. used ones arent to badly priced. i traded my t-350 for the muncie that was just rebuilt with new syncros. the clutch from ram is a single iron disc and the pressure plate is a long stlye with adjust springs and you can adjust the levers and counterweights. its a pretty neat deal for a single disc unit. with a sfi steel flywheel , the whole set up is about 950

33 should work real good for the mini mouse!!!! I'm running a 30 on the 408, with the big crank and arms plus the wheel it keeps the revs up fine on shifts....
The disc looks good! Is it metal on both sides or metal/ceramic????
sintered iron on both sides :D the hotter it gets the better it works. same style disc we used in the funny cars and dragsters. when it gets a glaze to it itll actually grab more! you can resurface them again and again to. ram says 80-100 runs depending on how hard your running. my mini mouse is low on torque so it will last a good while. every 10-20 runs your spose to resurface it. and adjust your clutch. i think its gonna be fun tuning the clutch. i learned a bit about that from the dragster guys
Yup, should work real good... I ran iron for awhile, used to burn out thru second gear, release the line lock and come out of the water, no dry hops and stage ASAP while the heat is really soaking into the disc!!!! Oh yeah, they're really fussy on the air gap to launch hard, too....
Another thought---With the little engine, does RAM make a 4 puck disc for that plate????? I ran them years back on the 302 Fords...they're aggresive as all get out, more like hitting a switch then engaging a clutch, but they sure worked good with the low torque!!!!!
i dont think ram makes a 4 puck i know ZOOM does. know ive had so many people tell me to use an alluminum flywheel vs a steel one. whats the big deal. it seems a heavy one would keep my inertia going between shifts. yes an alluminum one would spin up faster but lose the momentum?
nope, aluminum flywheels are for circle burners, and not even many are used there anymore.... A small engine needs the heavy wheel to keep the revs up (inertia) between shifts... Also, unless you launch on a stutter box it's a lot easier to maintain a steady rpm at launch with a heavier flywheel....
PS, I would strongly suggest a 2 step rev control!!! Use the 1st step with the line lock for launch rpm, and the 2nd step for max revs---not implying that you would ever miss a gear or anything!!!!!!:eek::eek::eek:

If so-- only six springs???
Do you have the bolts and weights for the arms??
I have a big box of hundreds of springs and adjusters if you want to add 3 more springs---or change the ones you have----some of them even have history
yeah thats the one. they make one identical to it without counterweights. but id like to get the one with counterweights to get into tuning the clutch to a t. ram says that set up is good to a thousand horse. i am well below that. would you run the exta springs?? i will have to get some weights and adjusters. if you have them how much do you want for them? BTW i am putting THE CAM in this winter also.
The weights are just bolts, metal locknuts and spacers/washers that you can add on the arms
If you run only one disc you will probably need a lot of pressure--a combo of static and centrifugal that is comfortable to hold pedal down---if you use a lot of centrifugal you need to be aware that as you build rpms at line the clutch will try to engage and you may redlight---takes a balance between clutch, left leg and line lock pressure to keep car from moving( for you former slush box drivers)

ram also sells different weighted levers as well. i was thinking about a front line pressure gauge like dave mentioned. launches are im assuming are going to be around 5500-7000
Should be right in there, maybe a bit lower... Can't remember what your car weighs... In my old Maverick with the 302 and Mr. Nash, car weighed 2280 with me in it, 4.88 gears I launched at 5200 and shifted at 7500.... Heavier weight on the car means with some clutch tweaking per Professor Clayton you should be able to get a decent launch at about the same revs.... I used to launch higher, but low gear got to quick...I went lighter on the counterweights, dropped the revs and took about 1/2 a tenth off the 60 foot.... As usual, "Your results may vary"!!!!:LOL:

dave, i amnot sure never have scaled the car, car is gutted ,only one seat, no interior, 8 point cage, not even door panels. i figured 3000 with me being 300lbs and iron heads. i am looking into a set of these heads though. nice looking and cheap priced.

hmmmm-gonna put up a pic, but I can't get them to load--oh well...
